In a chaotic men’s 100 freestyle program, Brazilian Gui Caribe has advanced through to the next round by the skin of his teeth twice.
In the heats, the 22-year-old Caribe placed 15th, posting a time of 48.27. Then, in a shocking semi-final, he placed 7th in his heat but 8th overall with a time of 47.64. In both instances, Caribe sat less than a tenth of a second from not moving on. The story was the same for the Tennessee Vol earlier in the meet, when he etched out a 50 fly semi-final spot tied for 7th, .01 ahead of 9th place.
To fans of the Salvador native watching from home, Caribe’s performances might be anxiety-inducing. Coming that close to the cut-off line is a gamble or dumb luck. However, Caribe’s swim patterns show that he might know exactly what he’s doing.
