ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The city of Rochester has issued a rare directive for businesses along North Clinton Avenue, asking them to close early on Saturday following the Puerto Rican Festival.
The letter, sent to News10NBC by Monroe County Legislature Vice President Mercedes Vazquez Simmons, warned that businesses could face charges if they do not comply.
The Puerto Rican Festival, one of Rochester’s largest summer events, is set to take place from Thursday through Saturday at Parcel Five in downtown Rochester.
Historically, shootings have occurred after the festival, including a mass shooting in 2023 near Don Samuel Torres Park.
The city’s order mandates that businesses receiving the letter must close by 4 p.m. on Saturday. Those who fail to comply could face a misdemeanor charge.
News10NBC reached out to the city for comment but has not received a response.
Business leaders on North Clinton Avenue are expected to be interviewed on Tuesday morning.
