Cincinnati police chief blasts behavior of people brawling in viral video

Cincinnati Police Department Chief Teresa Theetge slammed the behavior of individuals captured on tape participating in a violent brawl as “nothing short of cruel,” saying her team is working to identify individuals involved.

“I am in complete disgust waking up to the viral video many of you have now seen. The behavior displayed is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable,” Theetge said in a statement Saturday.

“Our investigative team is working diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm,” she continued.

Theetge said the dispute was “sudden” and followed a “verbal altercation,” noting it was not connected to the music festival nearby. She asked those with information to contact “Crime Stoppers” at 513-352-3042.

Video of the incident spread quickly online and caught the attention of some high-profile politicians from Ohio.

Vice President Vance, the former senator from Ohio, was asked about the incident at an event Monday.

“What I saw is a mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person, and it's disgusting,” Vance said, acknowledging he didn’t know the full context of the brawl. “And I hope every single one of those people who engaged in violence is prosecuted to the full extent of law, and they will be. They will be, so long as law enforcement in the state of Ohio takes their job seriously.”

“The only way to destroy that street violence is to take the thugs who engaged in that violence and throw their asses in prison,” he added.

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) called on Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval to condemn the incident, saying in a post on Sunday, “The Mayor of Cincinnati, @AftabPureval, who has an opinion on lots of irrelevant topics, has not issued a statement, let alone a condemnation, of this heinous attack.”

“Instead of dreaming about higher office, which will never happen, he should be ensuring his residents are safe,” Moreno continued.

On Monday, Pureval addressed the incident and said he is confident that arrests would follow.

"I am outraged by the vicious fight that occurred downtown. It is horrifying to watch, and this unacceptable and disgusting behavior is intolerable in any part of our community. That's not who we are as a city,” he wrote in a statement.

Pureval said he has been communicating with Theetge since the fight took place, and police have been “working around the clock to investigate and bring perpetrators of violence to justice.”

“Based on the investigation and the urgent work of our police, I am confident that arrests are forthcoming,” he continued. “For that reason, we are making every effort to allow our officers to do their job and present formal results to the public, rather than engaging with early speculation.”
