Chris Paynter has been named the new head coach of the swimming and diving program at Catholic University. Located in Washington, D.C., Catholic competes in the Landmark Conference as a member of NCAA Division III. This coaching change comes two months after former head coach John Bodden stepped down from the position.
Paynter is no stranger to the Landmark Conference, joining Catholic University. After serving as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swim teams at Wilkes University for the past three seasons. This past season, he led the Wilkes men’s program to its best dual meet record in program history, finishing at 8–2. The men’s team placed 6th at the 2024 Landmark Conference Championships. The Wilkes women’s program finished the 2024–25 season with a 3–6–1 record and placed 9th out of 10 teams at the Landmark Conference Championships.
Paynter now takes the helm at Catholic University, where the men’s program is coming off their 9th consecutive conference championship. Meanwhile, the women’s team finished last season with a 3–6 record, and placed 2nd at the conference championships. They finished as runner-ups by just over 100 points to the Champions, the University of Scranton. The team will be led by returning standouts: Bella Mugno, the defending Swimmer of the Year and Tara Wiarda, the Landmark Rookie of the Year.
Paynter swam collegiately at Division I Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He is a two-time Big East Champion and a six-time All-Big East performer as a member of various relay teams. He helped lead the Wildcats to Big East titles in both 2017 and 2018 as a member of the 200 freestyle relays. Paynter contributed to those efforts by earning medals in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. As an individual competitor, he was a six-time medalist—earning two medals each in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 100 butterfly.
Paynter succeeds John Bodden, who served as Catholic’s head swimming coach and aquatics director. Bodden, an alumnus of Division II powerhouse McKendree University, brought a strong collegiate swimming background into his role at Catholic. Bodden spent three years as head coach of Catholic University after one season as their graduate assistant. A native of George Town in the Cayman Islands, Bodden represented his home country at the 2019 Pan American Games. He will return to the Cayman Islands to serve as the head coach of the Stingray Swim Club.
