Lennox Lewis names ‘next coming’ of heavyweight division to succeed Oleksandr Usyk

Lennox Lewis has declared that Moses Itauma is the ‘next coming’ of heavyweight boxing.

The 20-year-old sensation has barely put a foot wrong during a perfect 12-0 start to life in the paid ranks.

Itauma has torn through B-rate opposition like a freight train, and he is now set to take a big step up in competition on August 16 against Dillian Whyte.

Provided Itauma comes through the domestic dust-up unscathed, then he will be on the verge of a world title shot.

And Lewis, Britain’s last undisputed heavyweight champion, believes Itauma will be a dominant force in years to come.

“Itauma is the next coming,” Lewis told assembled media.

“We’ve got a lot of heavyweights and great fighters coming out of Britain right now. Moses is definitely one of them.”

Lewis was in attendance at Wembley Stadium to witness Oleksandr Usyk reclaim his undisputed heavyweight crown with a spectacular knockout win over Daniel Dubois on Saturday night.

The Ukrainian slickster has now cleared out Britain’s three best heavyweights (Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Dubois) twice, and looks set to retire undefeated.

Usyk is expected to fight once more before hanging up his gloves.

If this does happen, then the belts will fragment, as the next generation of heavyweight tussles to establish the next heavyweight king.

Itauma is right at the top of that list, although he is in with elite company.

Joseph Parker and Agit Kabayel are still in their early thirties and currently rank among the top 5 in the heavyweight division.

Double Olympic gold medallist Bakhodir Jalolov also seems poised to make a big impact, while the man he beat for the 2020 Tokyo title, Richard Torrez Jr, is America’s best hope of a heavyweight champion.

Britain has its fair share of talent as well, with precocious 19-year-old Leo Atang rising through the ranks and heavy-handed Fabio Wardley blazing a path of destruction through the glamour division.

Itauma will have to be moved at the right pace to reach his full potential, and he is in safe hands with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren.

The Queensberry chief resisted the urge to mount a charge for Mike Tyson‘s record as the youngest heavyweight champion of all time and has flawlessly matched the Chatham southpaw so far.
