Ben Johnson’s Game Balls For Playoff Win vs. the Packers

I have no problem running it back again with Ben Johnson’s “Good, Better, Best” postgame speech after the Bears beat the Packers.

C’mon, now. How many times do you get to enjoy a Victory Sunday like this one?

Bears coach Ben Johnson hands out game balls after playoff win against Packers

The Bears head coach gave out three game balls after Saturday’s win against the Packers. Let’s talk about ’em…

    COLSTON LOVELAND, TIGHT END

Colston Loveland has been everything that Ben Johnson envisioned when he used the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on the University of Michigan product. Loveland’s slow start to his career feels like a distant memory with how he has played down the stretch. And after his performance against the Packers on Saturday, Loveland has entrenched himself as a top target in this offense. Loveland finished the game with eight catches, 137 receiving yards, and a key two-point conversion snag.

Not only was Loveland a key contributor to a win, but he also entered his name in the NFL record books:

    MONTEZ SWEAT, DEFENSIVE END

Ben Johnson said that Montez Sweat’s performance caught his eye on the defensive side of the ball. Sweat finished with three tackles and a deflected pass. He did not collect a sack or a tackle-for-loss, but he did come up with three quarterback hits. Football analyst Ryan Fowler (via Twitter/X) also credited Sweat with six total pressures and six hurries.

Montez Sweat’s game reminds me a lot of Alex Brown, who was a Bears defensive end fron 2002-09. From 2003 until 2009, the years when he was a primary starter for Chicago’s defense, Brown saveraged 6 sacks and 10 tackles-for-loss. He was a steady defender against the run while also a thread to pull through with the occasional quarterback pressure. Sweat is similar in that there is a steady reliable aspect of his game that comes with an occasional splash play. All things considered, it is nice to see someone like Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson acknowledge a player’s contributions to a winning effort — especially when the box score doesn’t totally capture everything.

    CALEB WILLIAMS, QUARTERBACK

The Caleb Williams-Ben Johnson love fest is something you need to watch here.

    Let’s revisit Caleb’s line:

    24/48 361 pass yards (7.5 yards/attempt) 2 touchdowns 2 interceptions 71.6 passer rating 37.0 ESPN QBR

I CAN’T STOP WATCHING THIS CALEB WILLIAMS THROW

The second-half stat line is something I will think about for a while: 283 passing yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 91.2 passer rating. And let’s not forget what he pulled off in the fourth quarter:

Caleb Williams in the 4Q of his playoff debut:? 195 total yards? 2 TD passes? 0 INTs? 110.0 passer ratingIceman. t.co/d6dOQLRhzI pic.twitter.com/Hq9yFqYVsT

I’m tired of pointing out that worrying about Williams’ completion percentage is useless. All that guy does is make winning plays when the moment matters the most. You can teach a quarterback how to throw with more accuracy and precision. But you can NOT teach whatever intangibles Chicago’s QB1 has at his disposal. Teaming Williams’ combination of athletic traits and a flair for the dramatic with Ben Johnson’s coaching prowess has taken the quarterback’s game to another level — one we haven’t ever seen from a Bears QB.
