President Donald Trump is set to deliver remarks on artificial intelligence and sign AI-related executive orders as he rolls out his administration’s “action plan” to give the U.S. a competitive advantage with the nascent technology.
White House officials said earlier Wednesday that the plan includes requiring AI developers to ensure their chatbots are “free of ideological bias” in order to be eligible for federal contracts.
“We believe that AI systems should be free of ideological bias and not be designed to pursue socially engineered agendas,” David Sacks, the White House artificial intelligence and crypto czar, told reporters.
The federal government will update its procurement guidelines to contract only with large language model developers that “allow free speech and expression to flourish,” said Michael Kratsios, director of the White House office of science and technology policy.
The Trump administration will also aim to spur innovation in the AI space by removing what it calls “onerous Federal regulations that hinder AI development and deployment,” the White House said.
The White House officials did not say how ideological bias would be defined and identified. The Government Services Administration is expected to put together procurement language requiring AI models to abide by standards of truthfulness as a condition for federal contracts, a White House official said.
