As temperatures climb across the region, San Diego Gas & Electric is ramping up efforts to ensure the power keeps flowing. From long-term infrastructure investments to expanded energy storage and year-round planning, the utility says it’s ready to meet rising summer demand.

“Preparation isn’t seasonal — it’s continuous,” said Kevin Geraghty, SDG&E’s chief operations officer and chief safety officer. “Our teams work year-round to strengthen the grid, invest in resilient systems, and support customers during extreme heat events.”

Boosting Energy Storage and Grid Reliability

To support regional energy needs, SDG&E recently completed a major expansion of its Westside Canal Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The site now delivers 231 megawatts of storage capacity — enough to power about 100,000 homes for four hours during peak demand — making it the largest facility in the utility’s battery portfolio.

By capturing clean solar and wind energy during the day and releasing it when demand spikes, battery systems like BESS help alleviate congestion on transmission lines, much like adding lanes to a busy freeway. The project is part of a broader push to build a more resilient, sustainable power grid across the region.

    Collaborating for Statewide Grid Stability

SDG&E’s work is part of a larger, statewide effort to maintain grid reliability. Because California’s power system is interconnected with other Western states, the utility coordinates closely with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to monitor conditions and respond to resource shortages.

    Outage Resources and Updates
