Timeline: Heat advisory issued for entire Chicago area as humidity swells

A sweltering heat wave will bring dangerously hot conditions to the Chicago area Wednesday, with high temperatures that will “feel” as high as 110 degrees continuing through late Thursday night, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory will go into effect at 10 a.m. for nearly all of Illinois and Indiana and remain through Thursday evening. It will also be in effect for parts of Wisconsin, including Kenosha County.

So what can you expect and when?

    Wednesday

Temperatures on Wednesday started in the 60s and are anticipated to rise as the day goes on, starting as early as 9 a.m., the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

Wednesday through Thursday are forecast to be the “period of most dangerous heat,” according to NWS.

Expect “very high heat index levels, very hot and humid conditions,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said.

Peak afternoon heat index values are anticipated to land around 100 to 110 degrees, the NWS warned.

The NWS added that the city of Chicago in particular will be “stifling” even at night, with heat indices remaining in the 90s through the evening hours, and temperatures only falling below 90 degrees for a few hours.

    Thursday

Temperatures will remain high Thursday throughout the morning.

About 3 p.m. Thursday, showers, storms and heavy downpours were expected to begin moving in, Roman said, which will bring temperatures down.

“Any storm may be severe and contain torrential rainfall,” NWS warned.

The heat advisory will remain in effect through 10 p.m. Thursday, where heat index levels could reach as high as 105 degrees.

    Friday and into the weekend

NWS said heat will ease on Friday but warns that “additional periods of slow-moving storms late Thursday night through Saturday will contain torrential rainfall and may produce localized flooding.”

Temperatures Friday are projected to drop from the mid 90s to 84 degrees and on-an-off stormy pattern is expected to continue through the weekend, Roman said.
