The owner of a northwest Indiana daycare revealed that she scratched a 3-year-old boy because he scratched another child, prosecutors said.
Elaine White, 39, who owns a daycare on North 18th Street near Wood Street in Chesterton, was charged with felony battery involving a person less than 14 years of age, according to court documents.
Court records showed a father showed up at the daycare on July 7 to say goodbye to his wife and son, because he was leaving for work, and he wouldn’t be returning for a few days. The father said he noticed his son holding his face and it wasn’t until he moved his hand that the father noticed a scratch on the boy’s face.
When asked by his father what happened, the boy said, “Elaine,” documents stated. The father asked White about what occurred, she said the toddler scratched another child, so she scratched his face in return, according to charging information.
Authorities stated text messages showed White’s attempt to create a back-up story.
“The only way out of that is to say another kid scratched him or he fell on a toy on the way down,” one text read.
The father provided police photos of the boy’s injuries, which showed two scratch marks on the right side of his face and a third, smaller scratch mark by the corner of his mouth on the right side, documents showed.
