A boater who allegedly fled after the 65-foot vessel he was piloting crashed into the side of the moored USS Midway on the San Diego Bay waterfront has been jailed on suspicion of hit-and-run and boating while under the influence of alcohol, authorities reported Monday.
Frank D’Anna, 40, was at the helm of the private vessel when it struck the port-side hull of the decommissioned aircraft carrier in the Embarcadero area just before noon on Friday, according to the San Diego Harbor Police Department.
The boat, named the Offshore Lifestyle, was gone by the time authorities arrived, but harbor police later found it near the Coronado Ferry Landing, contacted all seven people aboard it and took D’Anna into custody.
No one on the boat or on the Midway, which now serves as a floating military museum, was injured in the crash, according to the harbor police.
