American Chris Gotterup followed up his victory at the Scottish Open last weekend with a creditable third place, with compatriot Wyndham Clark and Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick tied for fourth alongside China’s Haotong Li.

Scheffler has the chance to become just the seventh man to win the career grand slam when he tees off at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills next June.

He would join an elite club of men to have won all of golf’s four majors, with Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and McIlroy being the others.
