RUSH, N.Y. – After months of debate, the Rush Fire Department will continue to operate its own emergency medical service through the end of the year. This decision came after a heated public meeting.
The Rush Board of Fire Commissioners had considered selling the ambulance service to CHS Mobile Health EMS due to concerns about a lack of volunteers, which they believed endangered lives.
The plan would have required current paramedics to join CHS, potentially leaving Rush without immediate EMS coverage.
“We’re happy that, it’s definitely a big win,” said Rush EMS Director Zachary DuBois.
DuBois explained that the community strongly supported keeping the ambulance service local. “They want a town run ambulance. They don’t want a commercial agency stepping in,” he said.
The Board will review the ambulance run records at the end of the year to determine the next steps.
DuBois expressed concerns about meeting the Board’s metrics but remained hopeful. “We’re always looking for members. Anyone that wants to join, can, send us an email or on the website,” he said.
Rush EMS members say they’ve noticed an increase in volunteer applications recently, which they hope will strengthen their position at the end of the year.
