A new season of dark, psychological drama The Couple Next Door is about to launch on Channel 4 with the lens turned to a new couple in the neighbourhood.

Annabel Scoley and Sam Palladio star as a child-free couple with high-flying medical careers and burgeoning mid-life crises.

Also arriving in the cul-de-sac is a mysterious nurse from Norway played by Aggy K Adams, while Hugh Dennis is back as reformed peeping Tom, Alan.

Written by David Allison and directed by Dries Vos, the series is loosely adapted from Scandi drama Fatal Injections.

Allison said: “The first series was about two couples that collided with each other – a square.

“Whereas this is more two love triangles with Charlotte and Jacob within those triangles, one with Mia and one with Leo.

“I don’t want to give anything away but things get pretty intimate and they get pretty explosive pretty quickly.”

Annabel Scholey stars as Charlotte Roberts, a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon married to Jacob.

Scholey said of the character in the show: “Charlotte is very focused, ambitious and a control freak.”

The British actress, 41, rose to prominence playing Lauren Drake in Being Human. She has gone on to have main roles in Medici, Britannia, The Split and The Sixth Commandment.

On stage, she has appeared in The Rivals, Richard III, Antigone and High Society.

Sam Palladio

Sam Palladio plays Jacob Roberts, Charlotte’s husband and a consultant anaesthetist.

Discussing his role, he said: “The world for Jacob is interesting.

“I’ve played lots of characters that are the love interest, the hero, the singer… these sorts of charming, charismatic characters and Jacob really gets to play in that world.

“Then also he goes on such an arc in this series and gets exposed to just so many different emotional pulls dealing with intense jealousy, rage and putting up a façade.”

British actor Palladio, 38, is best-known for playing Gunnar Scott in the series Nashville.

He has also appeared as Stoke in Episodes, Ed in Humans and Luke in Rebel.

Aggy K Adams is Mia Eldegard, a mysterious surgical nurse from Norway who is new in town.

Adams described her character as ” alone, an outsider and a survivor of an abusive relationship, which left her reeling from serious consequences”.

The British-Polish actress played the lead role of Ramona in Oh, Ramona! and starred as Lily in the French series Greek Salad.

She has also appeared in The Witcher and The Perfect Escape.

Sendhil Ramamurthy

Sendhil Ramamurthy appears as Leo Pandian, Charlotte’s former love interest from med school.

Talking about his role, he said: “Leo is from very wealthy family.

“He’s led a selfish, solipsistic life and everything kind of works out for him all the time and he takes a lot of things for granted, including relationships.

“It was a huge shock for Leo when he got stood up by his then-girlfriend Charlotte and it kind of sends him on his journey to where we then connect with him on the show.

“A lot of growth has happened for Leo in the past and viewers get to see the finished product when he turns up at the hospital all these years later.”

The American actor, 51, is best-known for playing Mohinder Suresh in Heroes and Gabriel Lowen in Beauty and the Beast.

He has also appeared as Ramsey Rosso in The Flash, Mohan in Never Have I Ever and Asher Pyne in Good Sam.

The Couple Next Door is set in Leeds, West Yorkshire but much of it was filmed in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Hugh Dennis said: “Filming in Belgium and Holland, pretending to be Leeds, is odd because Belgium doesn’t look much like Leeds.

“However, it’s great to experience a different country and way of life.”

The street where Charlotte, Jacob and Alan live, Appleby Drive, was actually filmed in the Neterlands.

Aggy K Adams said: “We were still figuring things out when we suddenly had to film outside in the snow for two weeks in the Netherlands, with temperatures around -2°C.

“The snow wasn’t expected, so the art department had to deal with defrosting everything.

“They used lamps to melt the snow but it was too cold. Some snow had to be removed in post-production.

“We weren’t ready for snow in early November! “

Some scenes were also shot in the Belgium city of Antwerp, as the director of the series Dries Vos is Belgian.

When is The Couple Next Door season 2 on, and how many episodes are there?

The second season of The Couple Next Door arrives on Channel 4 on Monday 14 July at 9pm.

There are six episodes of the news series and they will air on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening at 9pm this week and next.
