Derrick Lewis had Daniel Cormier in stitches when he revealed his plans after winning at UFC Nashville.
No.9-ranked UFC heavyweight Lewis stopped Brazil’s Tallison Teixeira in their main event clash on Saturday night, even though he went into the bout as a big underdog.
It only took ‘The Black Beast’ 35 seconds to dispose of Teixeira after cracking his younger opponent with a perfect left hand that sent him crashing into the canvas.
Lewis, 40, then took full advantage of his stunned opponent and followed up with nasty ground and pound before referee Jason Herzog waved off the night.
UFC CEO Dana White said after the fight that the stoppage was a little premature, but fans were quick to point out Teixeira used the cage to make it back to his feet, meaning he was unfit to continue.
Nonetheless, the charismatic Lewis has put himself in contention for a late title charge at the age of 40.
However, there was only one thing on his mind when he was asked what he wanted next by UFC Hall of Famer Cormier after the fight.
“I’ve been gone for two weeks,” Lewis said, and you could hear a pin drop inside Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
“So, I want my wife next,” he added before an explosion of laughter echoed around the arena.
“There’s going to be a lot of ground and pound. Ground and pounding.
“She knows what it is!”
Lewis’ victory extended his record in the UFC history books for the most KOs in the promotion’s history.
Lewis was asked who he wanted to fight nextGetty But ‘The Black Beast’ insisted he only wanted his wifeGettyIt was his 16th stoppage via KO/TKO since making his UFC debut in April 2014.
‘The Black Beast’ has fought for UFC gold twice during this time, losing both fights to Cormier himself in 2018 and Ciryl Gane three years later.
But with the lack of big contenders currently fighting in the heavyweight scene, he could find himself back in that position soon.
Lewis is one of the few heavyweights in the top 15 to not have fought UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, who will likely make his first defence of the title against Ciryl Gane in November.
Aspinall was elevated to undisputed champion last month after UFC legend Jon Jones informed White he would be retiring from the sport, though he has since reversed this decision with interest in a White House card next year.
Should Aspinall get past Gane and Lewis defeat a higher-ranked heavyweight during that time, there’s no reason both men couldn’t meet in a title fight soon.
