Texas has a rich history as a football program. Talented QBs pop up in nearly every decade starting in the 1940s and continuing to present day.
Will Arch Manning find himself on the Texas Mount Rushmore of QBs someday? We’ll find out starting this fall. But for now, the guys who do make up our list will be tough to replace.
Friday, July 11, is Texas Takeover Day at the SEC Network. That means it’s a great time to look back at some of the Longhorns’ best QBs over the years.
Here’s a look back at all the QB Mount Rushmore pieces we’ve done so far as we get closer to the start of SEC Media Days:
Alabama Arkansas Auburn Florida Georgia Kentucky LSU Ole Miss Mississippi State Mizzou Oklahoma South Carolina TennesseeToday we take a look at Texas. Here are the 4 players who make up the Longhorns’ Mount Rushmore of QBs:
Vince Young (2003-05)
VY is the obvious first candidate for the Longhorns. No, he didn’t win the Heisman Trophy in 2005. He fell by nearly 1,000 points to Reggie Bush (who later had to vacate the award, and then even later was re-awarded the trophy). But he got the last laugh as he led the Longhorns to a national title that year over Bush’s USC Trojans.
In 2005, Young threw for 3,036 yards and 26 touchdowns. But what he did as a runner was truly special — 1,050 yards and 12 scores. That was his second-straight season as a 1,000-yard rusher from the QB position.
The Longhorns won’t forget that 2005 national title soon, even as Steve Sarkisian has Texas back in championship contention on a yearly basis. VY was a special player and no one will wear his No. 10 jersey at Texas again.
Colt McCoy (2006-09)
When it comes to career passing records at Texas, McCoy is usually the guy at the top of the list. His 13,253 pass yards? First. His 45 wins as a QB at Texas? By far the most in school history. His 112 TD passes? You can see where this is going.
Yeah, McCoy had the benefit of being a long-term starter for the Longhorns, but he was also really dang good. If he didn’t get hurt during the first quarter of the national title game following the 2009 season against Alabama… OK, we don’t have to go there. Some memories are too painful.
His No. 12 jersey is retired by Texas. He’s a legend and it’ll take a truly special player to move McCoy’s name off the top line in the Texas record book (especially now that COVID eligibility years are hopefully in the rearview mirror).
Bobby Layne (1944-47)
We’re going way back in Texas football history with Bobby Layne. He was a rare 4-year player for the Longhorns in that era, as freshmen were allowed to play at Texas during wartime.
Starting in 1945 (Layne’s sophomore year), the Longhorns went 10-1, 8-2 and 10-1. They won the Cotton Bowl in 1945 and the Sugar Bowl in 1947.
Layne finished his Texas career with 3,145 pass yards and 25 touchdowns — not bad. And as good as he was as a quarterback, he may have been an even better pitcher for the Longhorns.
Layne would go on to win 2 NFL championships (in 1952 and 1953) with the Detroit Lions. Considering the Lions last won a title in 1957, we can see how difficult of a task that was.
James Street (1967-69)
James Street went 20-0 during his time as the Longhorns’ starting quarterback. That’s incredible no matter what era you played in. When you factor in that he started out as the 7th-string QB in 1966, his accomplishments are even more impressive.
He was a wishbone QB, so his passing numbers weren’t overwhelming (a pretty common thing in that era). But he managed to throw for 1,845 yards and 10 scores in his 2+ years in Austin. He also put up 815 yards and 10 touchdowns as a runner.
He was a big part of Texas’s run to the 1969 national championship, so he’s well-deserving of his spot on this list.
Honorable Mentions: Major Applewhite, Sam Ehlinger, Chris Simms, Peter Gardere (went 4-0 against Oklahoma)
