Crews working to contain the blackened burn zone of a wildfire that charred dozens of acres this week while threatening homes and forcing evacuations near Steele Canyon High School completed the task Thursday.

Firefighters had the 28-acre burn zone of the blaze fully surrounded by firebreaks as of 2 p.m. Thursday, roughly 24 hours after the fire erupted off Star Acres Drive, near Steele Canyon Road in Rancho San Diego, according to Cal Fire.

It took ground crews and personnel in air tankers and water-dropping helicopters about two hours to halt the spread of the blaze, dubbed the Steele Fire.

The northeast-moving flames caused no reported structural damage or injuries but prompted authorities to temporarily clear residents out of rural neighborhoods east and north of State Route 94; south of Jamacha Rd., Willow Glen Dr. and the Cottonwood Golf Club; and west of the eastern reaches of Steele Canyon Golf Club.

As of Thursday morning, there appeared to be no more flames or smoldering embers in the areas that burned, Cal Fire Capt. Robert Johnson said.

By then, officials had lifted all evacuation orders and warnings.
