San Diego artist Joseph Henseler has spent three decades creating art, a passion that he developed as a child and one that sustained him throughout his life.
In his studio in Kearny Mesa, he creates art in multiple disciplines, including sculptures, stained glass, photography, paintings, weaving and more. Now, 90 of his original works will be collected and shown to the public in an exhibition opening this weekend in Golden Hill.
“Hiding in Plain Sight” is described as a personal retrospective of the artist’s career and will run from Saturday to Aug. 10 at the Union Hall Gallery, 2323 Broadway.
The exhibition opening is from 4 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public, with reservations available at JA-Henseler-Art.
It will include a Q&A with the artist, live music, light bites and refreshments.
Henseler’s work features pieces made from everyday items, hewing to his belief that art can be made from anything and found anywhere.
“Show up anywhere and look at the surrounding nature; there is art,” he said. “Discarded paper, there is art. Look at the lighting after dark; there is art. Focus on anything at all, and you will find art. The artist’s job is to follow through and show what is often already in the open.”
Henseler was born in Spain to a U.S. Navy family and began drawing and writing poetry as a child.
He grew up in Pennsylvania and studied the intersection of art and architecture at Ball State University. In 1996, he moved to Julian, where he began working in the art studio of renowned artist James Hubbell.
And while creating his own works, he taught studio design at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego and stained glass at the Art Academy of San Diego.
