Greeley resident Brandon Wark announces candidacy for city council

Greeley resident Brandon Wark has formally announced his intent to run against Councilwoman Deb DeBoutez for the Ward 2 city council seat this November.

Wark opposed extending the food tax that was on the ballot in November, highlighting a key tenet of his campaign: promoting affordability in Greeley. Despite his limited experience in government, which comes from serving on the Weld County Redistricting Commission, Wark believes his lived experience of saving money and cutting costs will aid him in this goal.

“I’m no stranger to cutting costs to make ends meet. My parents worked hard to provide a good life, and I know hard work is what it takes to accomplish goals in life,” Wark wrote on his campaign website. “I’m dedicated to ensuring Greeley remains affordable for hardworking families. Our city is a great place to live, and I want to keep it that way!”

Ward 2 encompasses the area southeast of 23rd Avenue and 16th Street, including the University of Northern Colorado and Greeley Central High School. As part of the east side of Greeley, residents have been outspoken against the West Greeley Catalyst project, which will focus city funding on the west side of Greeley, a project that Wark and DeBoutez have also spoken out against.

The Catalyst project is a $1.1 billion development consisting of a luxury hotel, water park and new hockey arena for the Colorado Eagles — under a partnership between the city and Martin Lind’s Water Valley Company. Wark opposed the city’s decision to approve this development, questioning whether it was the proper role of government to go into debt to fund such a massive complex that many in the community have said they didn’t want.

In 2020, Wark started his blog, Free State Colorado, where he has spent the past five years touching on a wide variety of topics. A July 1 post about the U.S. Department of Justice investigating Colorado’s election records retention says “questions remain” about the legitimacy of the state’s elections, though no evidence indicating election issues is presented. A July 6 post solicits signatures for a petition calling on Colorado lawmakers to end taxes on tips and on overtime.

“Over the last five years, I’ve had incredible and inspiring conversations with liberty leaders all across our state. People who’ve dedicated their time, their money and their lives to protecting our liberty and expanding our freedom,” Wark said. “I think it’s important for everyone to get involved at the local level, because this is where you can have the biggest impact and really focus on issues that affect your neighborhood, your town and your city.”

Currently, Wark is the only other candidate contending with DeBoutez for the council seat this November, as no others have filed with the city clerk to run.

    Election Day is Nov. 4.
