The spotlight is on Joe Burrow, Jared Goff and Kirk Cousins as they star in the second season of Quarterback.
Netflix’s popular series, which premieres on July 8, follows three players at very different moments in their careers — from fighting for a Super Bowl to starting over in a new city.
Last season proved the QB position is more important than ever, and some of the NFL‘s biggest stars — including Burrow and Goff — are paid like it.
Other deals might leave fans shaking their heads, as teams overpay unproven talent in the desperate search for franchise leaders.
All together, the NFL’s signal callers are set to make more than $3billion on their current contracts.
Who’s making too much and who deserves extra cash?
Let the debate begin as talkSPORT ranks the top-10 highest paid QBs, by average annual value (AAV), in the NFL.
10. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
The biggest contract controversy of the 2023 offseason was answered with one of the biggest contracts in the NFL.
Serving as his own spokesman, Jackson helped negotiate a monster deal that rightfully paid him as one of the best QBs in the sport.
Jackson has already won two MVPs and he’s become the face of the Ravens, despite not being picked until the final selection (No. 32) during the first round in 2018.
Since then, Action Jackson has changed the way the QB position is played and has turned ‘dual threat’ into an asset instead of a hindrance.
He finished second to Josh Allen in 2024 NFL MVP voting, yet is still searching for his first Super Bowl appearance.

Herbert is making more than Jackson, which says everything about the sometimes over-inflated value of NFL QB contracts.
There’s no doubt that Herbert is good.
But the Chargers were kicked out of the playoffs by the Houston Texans last season, and Herbert acknowledged the disappointing defeat was on him.
Still, the QB has a cannon for an arm and he’s exceeded expectations since becoming the No. 6 overall pick in 2020 out of Oregon.
He just needs to win a few big playoff games to justify more than $260m in promised cash.

Fans will soon get a glimpse into Goff’s life as Netflix pull back the curtain on the Lions QB, who had a seriously impressive 2024 season.
Since departing the Los Angeles Rams five years ago, just 12 months after reaching Super Bowl LIII, he has thrived in Motor City.
The Lions were the NFL’s most electric offense last time out, and their 564 total points scored were the fourth-most ever in a regular season.
While Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery formed a feared running back tandem, Goff also added 4,629 yards and 37 touchdowns to the mix.
But Detroit, who were heavily-favored to make the Super Bowl for much of the season, came up short in the divisional round of the playoffs with defeat against rookie Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.
Despite disappointment, Goff proved his worth.

Mr. Irrelevant is now Mr. Cash.
Purdy raked in the dough after being the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.
The 49ers also gave Purdy trade veto power normally reserved for only the best in the game.
But he’s only made one Pro Bowl, while the 2024 season was the worst of his career.
Purdy posted career lows in completion percentage (65.9) and passer rating (96.1) in a year that saw the 49ers go a disappointing 6-11 and fail to make the playoffs.
Handing Purdy $265m and a powerful no-trade clause doesn’t sit well with some San Francisco supporters.

There’s no doubt that the Dolphins failed to meet expectations in 2024, and part of that was down to Tagovailoa’s injury issues.
Last July, the QB signed a four-year, $212.4m extension with the Dolphins through 2028, and he opened the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars, throwing for 336 yards and leading a game-winning field goal drive.
But in Week 2, Tua suffered another concussion against the Buffalo Bills, after leading with his helmet into contact with safety Damar Hamlin on a scramble.
He was placed on injured reserve following what became his third diagnosed concussion in two years, which required him to miss at least four games.
While he was sidelined, Tagovailoa met with neurologists to determine the viability of returning to play, before stating that he did not consider retirement after the concussion.
He made his return in Week 8, and impressed in the games that followed, hitting milestones that included joining Dan Marino as the only Dolphins quarterback with a 300-yard performance in three consecutive games, as well as throwing his 100th TD pass.
But Miami struggled to an 8-9 record, and missed the playoffs.

The Packers PAID Love, their Aaron Rodgers replacement, in July 2024.
Having led Green Bay to the playoffs in 2023, the young star inked a $220m, four-year extension at an average of $55 million a year, which tied him for the highest average annual value at the time.
Love’s contract also included a $75m signing bonus and $155m in guaranteed money, giving him one of the best deals in NFL history.
But the Packers returned to the postseason in 2024, after their QB led the team to an 11-6 season.

Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?

Unfortunately for Green Bay, the NFC North was stacked last time out, with both the Lions and Minnesota Vikings finishing ahead of them.
While Love and the Packers secured a playoff berth, they lost their last two games of the regular season, and ended up as the last seed.
That put them on a collision course with the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round, and their season was ended by the eventual Super Bowl champions.

Seeing Lawrence’s name this high on the list might stun some NFL fans.
He’s undoubtedly talented and has franchise QB potential.
But Lawrence still hasn’t delivered on his college Clemson hype and the Jaguars disappointed again in 2024, firing Doug Pederson as head coach soon after the season was over.
Through 60 NFL games, the No. 1 overall pick in 2021 is only 22-38 as a starter.
New Jacksonville head coach Liam Coen was hired to get more out of Lawrence in 2025.

The pull of Joe Cool is expected to bring plenty of eyeballs to Netflix’s new Quarterback season.
Burrow, the modern face of the Bengals, is averaging a whopping $55m a year — which is tied with three other QBs for the second-most in the NFL.
After leading LSU to a perfect season in college, the former Ohio high school star became the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Burrow has already been to the Super Bowl and has become one of the main AFC rivals for the dominant Patrick Mahomes.
Now, the Bengals must find their way back to the top of the conference in 2025.

Allen is unquestionably the Bills’ franchise QB.
But will he carry Buffalo where Jim Kelly couldn’t reach?
Kelly made four Super Bowls during the Bills’ glory days in the 1990s.
Allen has impressed since entering the NFL in 2018 as a risky No. 7 overall pick out of Wyoming, which isn’t famous for producing Super Bowl winners.
He’s already reached the playoffs in six seasons and just won NFL MVP.
But there’s still another level that Allen can reach and he must get there if he’s going to eventually replace Kelly as the best QB in Bills history.
Contract: $330m total, $55m AAV

The richest sports franchise in the world kicked off a new NFL season in 2024 by paying its franchise quarterback.
The Cowboys handed Prescott a massive four-year, $240 million extension — and his AAV is the highest in history.
Prescott is a three-time Pro Bowler and has put up big numbers in the past.
But the 31-year-old QB is just 2-5 in the playoffs and coming off a major injury, and there are looming questions about his ability to lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl victory in 2025.
