The NASCAR Chicago Street Race has been impacted for two consecutive years by nasty weather, but could we see a three-peat on Sunday?
Rain has hampered the race throughout its existence, shortening the 2023 race to 78 laps and last year’s race to 58, with drivers attempting to outrace both rain and darkness on the city streets around Grant Park.
This year’s race is set to race 75 laps around the 2.2-mile circuit, but will we see a full edition of the Grant Park 165?
According to forecast models, showers and storms are expected to develop in the Chicago area on Sunday afternoon as a cold front begins to push its way down the lakeshore, producing gusty winds, heavy rain and large waves as it passes.
The National Weather Service is expecting heavy rain with some storms that develop, targeting a window between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. for the worst of the weather to arrive in the city of Chicago.
That would put it right in the thick of the race in Grant Park, with the green flag set to drop at 1 p.m., with the race airing on TNT Sports and streaming on HBO Max.
You can track the radar here, or on the NBC Chicago app:
Last year’s race was supposed to feature 75 laps, but was shortened to 58 after rain delayed the start and darkness impacted the conclusion of the race. The 2023 edition of the race had originally been scheduled for 100 laps, but ultimately only ran 78 before darkness ended the proceedings.
Fortunately, Saturday’s Xfinity Series race went the full 50 laps around the circuit, with Shane van Gisbergen capturing the checkered flag for the second consecutive year.
The New Zealand-born van Gisbergen also won the first-ever Cup Series race in Chicago in 2023, but finished 16th last season. He ultimately captured the pole position for this year’s race too, giving him a prime opportunity to sweep the weekend’s races in Chicago.
