The world’s oldest person is officially 117 years old. Ethel Caterham celebrated her milestone birthday among family and friends at the Hallmark Lakeview Care Home in England.
Despite her age, Caterham revealed in a statement that the past year had “many firsts” for her, including meeting King Charles III.

“Thank you for all of the kind birthday wishes. Even at 117, I’ve had many firsts this year, from stroking a llama to holding hands with the King,” she wrote. “I’ve had a lovely day celebrating with my family and friends, and I look forward to seeing what next year brings.”
The King visited Caterham in September 2025, shortly after her 116th birthday, and presented her with a signed card.
View this post on InstagramCaterham officially became the world’s oldest woman in April 2025, following the death of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas at 116 years old. However, Caterham is not the oldest living woman in history… yet. That honor goes to a French woman by the name of Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years and 164 days, as reported by Guinness World Records.
According to The Mirror, Caterham was born on August 21, 1909, and was the youngest of eight siblings. Caterham met her husband, Norman, in India, where she was working as an au pair, in 1931. Sadly, he passed away in 1976.
She raised two daughters, Gem and Anne, but they both also died before her. Caterham has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, drove until she was 97, and survived COVID in 2020.
Caterham’s granddaughter wrote a sweet tribute on her 110th birthday and revealed her secret to living a long life.
“When asked what her secret sauce is for long life, she always says keeping positive. But I also think it’s that she stays present. She doesn’t retreat into the past; she is bang up to date, and she loves a matching shoe and bag combo – and her dress was way nicer than all of ours at her party,” she wrote. “All in all, she’s just a force of nature and makes you feel that you can do stuff, because she bloody well is.”
We have a feeling she will be the next Guinness World Record holder!
