Ontario County sees spike in bat calls, warns of rabies exposure

ONTARIO COUNTY, N.Y. — The Ontario County Public Health says they have seen a rise in bat-related calls, especially in areas like Washington Street in Geneva.

According to the Ontario County website, a small percentage of bats carry rabies. They also say you may have been exposed to rabies if you found a bat in your room when you woke up, a child or someone who can’t speak for themselves was near a bat, a bat touched you or your pet touched a bat.

They advise that if a bat gets into your house, you catch it then call Public health. To catch a bat, wear thick gloves, wait for the bat to land, and use an empty plastic container with a lid to trap it and then contact a local health department immediately.
