Another Edgbaston trauma loading for India? More than pitch, past results could play on minds

Losing a series opener badly, never quite helps the visiting team’s cause. Team India, despite dominating with the bat in patches, were absolutely poor in the field and with the ball. They let England score 371 in the fourth innings. And now, the caravan moves to the second Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham, where Team India only has poor memories.

Edgbaston — Not a Happy Hunting Ground for Team India

In their last encounter there, in 2022, the team had lost by seven wickets, despite setting a target of 378. And with the first look of the pitch out already, the wicket might just support the host team once again. As per Ray Sportz, the pitch has decent covering of grass for now, which might be shaved out, and a heavy roller might be used eventually, a day before the match.

That means, there would certainly be something in it for the bowlers. But over the years, it has only become better for the batters, provided the batsmen are ready to battle it out in the middle. If one also takes out the pitch out of the equation, it will be the poor record at Edgbaston, Birmingham, that would play on the minds of Shubman Gill & Co.

    Birmingham Struggle Has Been Real

Let us start with the 2022 match. After batting first, India scored 416, while bundling out ENG for 284. In the second innings India added 245, and while the hosts chased down a massive 378 in close to 75 overs. 2018 match was a close one that IND lost by 31 runs. England first scored 287, and in reply India could manage 274. Third innings saw ENG score paltry 180, while the visitors could not smash down 193.

India Batting Could Struggle in Second Test

2011 clash was a landmark one, where Alastair Cook went on to pile a massive 294, that took ENG to 710, in reply to India’s first innings total of 224. Following on, they were again all out for 244. That said, the matches prior to that are way too back in history — in 1996, 1986 (only drawn match). 1979, 1974 and in 1967.

Surprisingly, such has been India’s struggle at this venue, that they have only managed to go past 300 twice in 16 innings. That just highlights their record of seven losses, and one draw here. If one has to predict, as to how would India fare in the upcoming encounter, it could be a real struggle for the batters — who have historically batted poorly at Birmingham, and the recent twin-collapses in Leeds, could make matters worse for Shubman Gill’s team.
