Novak Djokovic warned over worrying sign and told rival is ‘the man to stop’ at Wimbledon

Father Time waits for no-one, not even Novak Djokovic.

Although the Serbian superstar remains one of the best on tour, his wait for a Grand Slam title now sits at over 650 days.

It seems an unfathomable drought given the 38-year-old is the most successful male in the Open Era having won a record 24 Grand Slams.

The wait may continue given British tennis star Liam Broady picked up on a worrying sign during Djokovic‘s run to the semi-finals of this year’s French Open.

But if there was ever a time for Djokovic to snap out of his Grand Slam stasis, it is at the All England Club where he has reached the final in every year at Wimbledon since 2018.

When asked about Djokovic’s hopes in SW19, Broady said on talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast: “It’s a tough one because for the last two years, I’ve always been saying you can’t bet against the GOAT (greatest of all time), and he’s not won one yet.

“But this is the thing, Djokovic has won the most slams in the history of men’s tennis so I will never bet against him.

“If he finds himself in a final or a semi-final, you know he’s going to be out there and he’s going to be difficult to beat.

“I think maybe this year for the first time at the French Open, his movement didn’t quite look perhaps as it’s been in the past.

“That’s been one of his greatest weapons. I think he’ll start to find it pretty difficult.

“But as you say, Wimbledon’s probably his best chance now and I think he’ll be aware of that.”

Although Djokovic’s presence will undoubtedly loom large at Wimbledon, there’s one other man who British No. 5 Broady believes is the favourite to reign supreme.

“I think at Wimbledon, Carlos [Alcaraz] is the man to stop,” Broady remarked.

“Jannik [Sinner] on the hard courts looks like he’s going to be the man to beat at the Australian Open and the US Open.

“I was surprised how close he got and how well he was playing on the clay at Roland Garros.

“I think at Wimbledon, Jannik doesn’t move quite as well on the grass. The ball stays a bit lower so it’s harder for the taller, bigger hitters to play on the courts.

“Carlos has so much variety to his game. He’s a little bit [Roger] Federer-esque at times. He’s a shot-maker and I think the grass suits him really well.”

Alcaraz goes into this year’s Wimbledon as the defending champ having breezed past Djokovic in straights sets in last year’s final.

Victory at the All England Club would also mark a stunning three-peat for Alcaraz given he won his maiden Wimbledon title in 2023.

Should that transpire, Alcaraz would join an exclusive four-man club who have won three or more consecutive Wimbledon titles in the Open Era.

Djokovic, Federer, Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg are the quartet who have achieved the feat, with Djokovic the most recent to do so.

One individual who may be in attendance to witness Alcaraz’s glory is British women’s number one Emma Raducanu.

Raducanu, who is a close friend of Alcaraz, was on hand to watch the Spaniard take out the title at Queen’s in West Kensington.

She was also snapped walking side-by-side with the five-time Grand Slam champion through the confines of Wimbledon on Friday.

But it was quickly revealed the pair were involved in an activation for water brand Evian, who Raducanu and Alcaraz are both brand ambassadors of.

Alcaraz will begin his title defence on Monday with a first round encounter against Italy’s Fabio Fognini.
