At least six people including three children were injured after a wrong-way driver in Lake County on Thursday night smashed head-on into a car in oncoming traffic, leading to a multi-car crash and “serious damage” to at least three vehicles, the sheriff’s office said.
The crash occurred about 7:25 p.m. in Beach Park, on Lewis Avenue near Beach Road, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 52-year-old Waukegan man was driving a 2004 Mini Cooper northbound on Lewis Avenue when he crossed into the southbound lanes of traffic. Witnesses reported seeing the man driving “erratically” before the crash, the release said.
The car collided head-on with a 2004 Buick SUV heading southbound, driven by a 34-year-old Waukegan man with three children inside. The Mini Cooper then struck a 2018 GMC SUV driven by a 48-year-old woman from Zion before coming to a stop.
According to the sheriff’s office, the occupants of the Buick and the SUV were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Mini Cooper was transported to a nearby hospital and was last listed in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team, the release said.
The serious crash comes after the sheriff’s office in nearby McHenry County reported a serious of fatal crashes that left multiple people, including an 11-year-old child, dead over the span of just 12 hours.
“We’re urging every driver: slow down, stay alert, and make responsible decisions behind the wheel,” McHenry County Sheriff Robb Tadelman said, in a press conference about the deadly crashes. “Your life, and the lives of others, depend on it.”
