Therabody massage gun review: Is it worth £329?

As a runner and a martial arts fan, I’m constantly looking for ways to relieve stiffness and soreness after exercising.

Normally, I’d spend around £10 to £20 on the problem, trying different protein powders, muscle rubs or bath salts, and would never have dreamed of paying upwards of £300 for a massage gun.

However, after using the Therabody Theragun Prime Plus from neck to calf for the past few weeks, I’ve got to admit that I’ve become very fond of it.

Therabody is the original pioneer in massage guns for home use, launching the Theragun G1 in 2016.

The idea is that a percussive massage overrides the pain signals to the brain, increases heat in the tissue, and releases tension.

Nine years on, the Theragun Prime Plus is capable not just of percussive massage but can deliver heat therapy to relax tense muscles, with four attachments to delve into different body parts.

There’s even Bluetooth capability so you can sync it to the Therabody app and get guided routines on how to use it properly.

If you think that all sounds a bit too good to be true, I don’t blame you; that was my initial reaction.

However, over the last two weeks, the Theragun Prime Plus has literally shaken the scepticism out of me and even helped me kick higher – something I didn’t think use of a massage gun would provide.

How I tested the Therabody Prime Plus

As a regular endurance runner, gym-goer and martial arts fan, I experience my fair share of muscle soreness.

To test the Theragun Prime Plus, I used it consistently after workouts, focusing on major muscle groups like legs, back, and shoulders.

I also used it on rest days to address general muscle tension, playing with all five preset speeds and experimenting with the guided routines within the Therabody app.

To assess whether it was good value for money, I paid close attention to ease of use, battery life, noise levels, and, most importantly, its effectiveness in reducing muscle soreness and improving recovery.

    Therabody Prime Plus Quickfire Q&A

How much is the Therabody Theragun Prime Plus? The Therabody Theragun Prime Plus costs £379.

How do you use a Therabody Theragun Prime Plus? It’s extremely easy to use the Theragun Prime Plus, especially if you follow the instructions in the Therabody app.

What’s it best for? Anyone who pushes themselves hard when it comes to fitness and exercise. Or if you don’t have the time to book and attend 60-minute professional sports massages.

What we loved? The Therabody app took all the guesswork out of massage. The heat attachment added an extra element of relaxation to the experience.

What we didn’t: Not everybody has a high enough disposable income to spend £329 on a piece of tech. While it’s sturdy and made from top-quality materials, it only has a two-year warranty, which feels a bit low.

As soon as I took it out of its hardy carry case, I thought the device felt solid and well-built, with a comfortable grip that allows for easy manoeuvrability.

The Prime Plus offers five preset speeds, ranging from a gentle percussion to a more intense, deep-tissue massage.

I loved that the carry case has illustrations that show what each massage head is best used for.

To start, I picked the heated percussive attachment, as I was intrigued to experience the effects of combining heat and vibrations.

Out of the five speed settings, I’d definitely advise starting on the lowest setting.

The highest setting wasn’t pleasant, and I felt I was tensing up and bracing myself for the impact, not the relaxing experience I had in mind.

However, what made it easier to use and what truly sets this massage gun apart is the Therabody app.

Once I’d downloaded the Therabody app from the App Store, created an account, I followed the on-screen instructions to pair the device via Bluetooth.

The app immediately recognised the Prime Plus, and within a few minutes I was given some guided routines.

These automated the heat and intensity settings, so I could enjoy the massage rather than worry about what buttons to press.

There are guided routines tailored to specific needs, such as warm-up, recovery, sleep, and even routines targeted at specific sports like running or cycling.

They guide you through each muscle group, indicating the optimal speed and duration for effective treatment.

I couldn’t fault the app at all as it is intuitive and easy to navigate, and I found it simple to find the right routine for my needs.

It was really satisfying to use it to relieve specific areas of tension, such as my lower back and shoulders.

I was also super impressed that the Therabody app can sync with Apple Health, Strava and Garmin Connect to keep an eye on what fitness activities you’re doing and suggest guided massages to help with performance and recovery.

In terms of performance, the Theragun Prime Plus delivers a powerful and effective massage.

According to Therabody, the amplitude (the depth of the massage) is 12mm, which provides a powerful treatment for reaching deep into the muscle.

Battery life is also impressive, with a full charge providing around 120 minutes of use, which is more than enough for multiple sessions.

The device also charges relatively quickly, taking around 90 minutes to reach full capacity.

Noise levels are reasonable, although not completely silent, as it operates at around 50-60 decibels.

Overall, my “oohs” and “aahs” of relief when I massaged out a particularly tight knot were much louder than the operational noise of the Therabody Theragun Prime Plus handheld massager.

    Verdict

So, is the Theragun Prime Plus worth the £379 price tag? For me, the answer is a definite yes.

As someone who puts their body through a fair bit of stress with regular workouts, I’ve found this massage gun to be a lifesaver.

It’s genuinely helped to reduce muscle soreness, improve my recovery time, and even alleviate those annoying tension headaches I sometimes get from hunching over a laptop all day.

The app is fantastic, guiding you through routines and making sure you’re targeting the right areas.

It’s an investment, for sure, but if you’re serious about taking care of your body and improving your overall well-being, I reckon it’s money well spent.

It’s become an essential part of my post-workout routine, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

    FAQs

    How to use a Theragun?

Using a Theragun effectively involves a few key steps.

First, it’s best to switch the device on before you actually place it on your body.

This allows you to adjust the power to a level that feels comfortable for you right from the start.

Then, gently float the Theragun on the surface of your muscles without applying any additional pressure.

Move the device slowly across the area you want to treat, and if you come across any knots or areas of high tension, spend a little more time working on those specific spots.

Try to breathe deeply and try to relax as the Theragun does its work.

The Therabody app offers personalised routines and guidance to maximise the benefits of your Theragun.

    How effective are Theraguns?

A Theragun can help reduce muscle stiffness, offering short-term recovery benefits.

Many users find them effective for alleviating muscle soreness and pain because they can break up knots and trigger points, which helps reduce delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.

Moreover, Theraguns can increase blood flow, which is helpful as it boosts circulation, aiding in the removal of waste products and delivering oxygen and nutrients to the muscles.

Finally, they can also promote relaxation, which in turn helps reduce stress and anxiety.

Can you use a Theragun while pregnant?

It’s generally acceptable to use a Theragun during pregnancy for relieving stress and tension, but there are some precautions to keep in mind.

It’s always best to consult your doctor before using a massage gun during pregnancy, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy or any pre-existing conditions.

It’s also important to avoid using the Theragun on your stomach.

Some advise against using it on the hips and legs due to the increased risk of blood clots during pregnancy; if you do massage your legs, use very light pressure.

Some people find that gentler models, such as the Theragun Mini or Prime, are more suitable during pregnancy.

If you’re unsure, always err on the side of caution and seek medical advice.
