Back in the Ranji Trophy sessions of 2015-16, former Delhi coach Ajay Jadeja quit the role of head coach of the Delhi State team. The former Indian player, Ajay Jadeja, recalls his attempts to convince the Delhi batter Rishabh Pant to attend training sessions after a snub from the Delhi state squad.
Ajay Jadeja, during his short stint with the Delhi team, oversaw some training sessions. Rishabh Pant was initially snubbed from the squad, but his calibre seemed enough to make a debut midway in the Ranji season.
To this, Ajay Jadeja remarked that after Pant's snub from the Delhi State team, he tried to convince him to keep attending the Ranji training sessions. It is notable that Gautam Gambhir was the Delhi captain when Pant was about to make his debut.
The 18-year-old Indian wicket-keeper batsman then turned down his proposition and claimed with utter confidence that if the management really needed him, then they would call him directly.
“I will never forget our first meeting," Jadeja recalled on Sony Sports.
“I was the coach of Delhi for a few days before quitting (in 2015). The selectors and captain kept arguing over the players they wanted to have in the team. Pant wasn’t picked."
"I still told him (Pant) to attend the practice session for the Ranji Trophy, telling him that it doesn’t matter that you’ve not been selected, there will be a chance in future." said Ajay Jadeja in his statement to Sony Sports
Pant's reply to this not only shocked Ajay Jadeja then, but also took everyone by surprise recently. Pant had a significant portrayal of confidence when he showed utmost faith in his abilities.
Pant replied to Ajay Jadeja, "Bhaiya rehne do na, jab zaroorat padegi, ghar se bulayenge.", as said by Jadeja on Sony Sports
Rishabh Pant's Record in First-Class Cricket
Rishabh Pant made his debut in Indian first-class cricket back in 2015, when Pant was just 18 years old. Pant plays in the Ranji Trophy for the Delhi State Cricket team, as the batter scored a stunning triple-hundred against Maharashtra the very next year post-debut.
Rishabh has played 70 matches in his first-class career, as the batter went on to score 5138 runs, averaging 47.13. The batter has 13 centuries to his name and a triple century in the Ranji Trophy as well.
Following several good domestic first-class seasons and a stunning IPL, Pant made his Test debut for India back in August 2018 against England. Ever since his debut, Pant has been a star in the longest format of the game.
Pant went on to score 3200 runs playing across 44 test matches, where the batter averages 44.44 down the order. He is among the most successful Indian wicket-keeper batters with an exceptional set of records as well.
