Mathews Elementary caps 1st year

VIENNA — The Mathews Board of Education and residents received an idea of how the district’s elementary school fared in its first year of its new arrangement, thanks to its principal.

Mathews Elementary School Principal Michael King told board members Wednesday that many felt that the transition from Currie to Baker Elementary — which was later renamed to Mathews Elementary ahead of its merger in the 2024-25 school year — “didn’t seem to go as seamlessly as it could have.”

“I think everyone had to pull together and get things done,” King said. “The configuration of the building, I think, was pretty nice, as we were able to keep one hallway for K-2, the other hallway was 3-5 (grade). I think, all in all, it went pretty well.”

King said there were things the school didn’t anticipate happening, but they were able to move past them without any problems, noting that the end of the school year was a bit more difficult because one of the secretaries became ill.

King said the biggest bone of contention among staff, teachers and parents was the playground, which, with the addition of the gymnasium at the elementary school, got in the way of its existing playground.

He said construction crews have disassembled the swings at Currie Elementary, and they were supposedly delivering them Wednesday to be installed in two separate locations.

“There’s two sets, so we’re going to have one over by the K-2 playground and then (the other) one so those will definitely be in place,” King said. “And that’s a nice addition to have, because even when I look at the old Baker playground, the swings were one of the primary things they (the kids) did.”

The board approved scheduling Currie Elementary’s closure at the end of the 2023-24 school year in November 2023.

Superintendent Russell McQuaide reported that they were working on the sale of Currie’s property, which is slotted for auction July 14. It will be a live auction, and the board will hold a special meeting to either approve or deny the price that day, according to board President Mark Haddle.

    In other action, the board:

    • Approved a new contract for McQuaide, which will be effective Aug. 1 through July 31, 2028. His salary is $98,250, which will not change through the contract’s term.

    • Accepted the resignation of bus driver and food service Laurin Lin, effective June 6.

    • Accepted Title 1 tutor Christopher Kowach’s resignation.

    • Accepted 6th-grade teacher Pamela Harriman’s resignation.

    • Accepted speech and language pathologist Carla Pacileo’s resignation for retirement purposes, effective July 1.

    • Accepted special education supervisor Jennifer Soukenik’s resignation, effective July 31.

    • Approved granting Jennifer Frazzini a supplemental contract totaling $12,000 as special education supervisor for the 2025-26 school year.

    • Approved a renewal agreement with The Nutrition Group for food management services for the 2026 fiscal year.

    • Approved an agreement between the board and Trumbull County Sheriff Michael Wilson to provide a school resource officer from July 1, 2024, through July 30, 2025, at a rate of $83,639, which includes administrative fees and cruiser.

    • Approved declaring the district’s intent not to provide career-technical education to students in grades 7-8 for the 2025-26 school year.
