Trent Dilfer’s success on the high school sidelines didn’t translate to the college ranks at all. The former Super Bowl champion, who went 44-10 in four seasons at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville and won state championships in 2021 and 2022, was fired six games into his third season at UAB after a 9-21 mark.
Lipscomb has posted records of 5-6, 4-6, and 3-8 since Dilfer’s departure. With it looking for a new head coach and Dilfer in search of a gig after failing to catch on at UAB, a reunion was always a possibility. And, ultimately, that’s what we got after Dilfer was re-hired in January.

If you’re wondering, Lipscomb’s season kicks off on Aug. 21 against McCallie School in Chattanooga before it faces Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn. The Mustangs’ home opener is on Sept. 4 against Knoxville Catholic. We’ll see if Dilfer’s return can get the Mustangs back on track.
