THE Kansas City Chiefs face a selection headache in their bid to correct a glaring hole.
Head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach have been busy revamping the roster this offseason.
The Chiefs suffered a Super Bowl disaster in February with their 40-22 defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was sacked six times by a rampant Eagles defence.
Kansas City’s offensive line was an issue all NFL season, and the problem was highlighted on the biggest stage.
Reid and Veach have worked to fix the problem and protect quarterback Mahomes.
According to The Athletic, only two of the five spots on the Chiefs line are certain for 2025.
Guard Joe Thuney was traded to the Chicago Bears in March.
Kansas City also signed Jaylon Moore from the San Francisco 49ers on a two-year deal worth $30 million.
And their first round NFL Draft selection April was offensive tackle Josh Simmons.
The report in the Athletic says that Jawaan Taylor’s position on the offensive line is under threat.
Only center Creed Humphrey and guard Trey Smith can be certain of their starting jobs, it is claimed.
And that leaves Kansas City with three position battles on the offensive line.
The report also says Taylor and Mike Caliendo could find themselves as backups by the time the season starts.
Reid gave an initial outline for the Chiefs plans on the offensive line earlier this year.
He said the decision to sign Moore was in part down to his years in college playing alongside Caliendo.
Reid said, “First of all, he was backing up a pretty good player in San Francisco.
“Arguably the best to ever play the game.”
“He played next to Caliendo for three years; he was a good football player there.
“We thought that he would be a nice addition to our offensive line as we continue to work that.”
Kingsley Suamataia struggled at left tackle as a rookie and was moved inside to guard later in the season.
“When we brought him in, we knew he had that flexibility,” Reid said.
“We just felt that way athletically. He is a very good athlete.
“He can run and pass block and do all the things that he needs to do.
“I thought he felt more comfortable (at guard) as a young guy, so we stuck him there, and he did a nice job against Denver.
“That was one of the bright spots in a game that didn’t have many.”
