Texas Instruments to spend $60bn on seven new US factories
American semiconductor maker Texas Instruments (TI) is spending $60bn on seven manufacturing plants on three sites – two in Texas, and one in Utah – which it says will create around 60,000 jobs.

Calling it the “largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in US history”, the company said it had been “working with the Trump administration” on the project.

During the Biden administration TI received $1.6bn in funding through the CHIPS and Science Act.

Some of the plants are already under construction.

At its site in Sherman, Texas, the SM1 semiconductor fabrication plant will begin production this year, three years after breaking ground. The exterior of SM2 has been completed. Two more plants, SM3 and SM4, are planned.

In Richardson, Texas, the company will build a second factory while bringing its first, RFAB1, up to full capacity.

Construction is also underway on a new plant in Lehi, Utah. It will be connected to the site’s original 300mm wafer fabrication plant.

“Leading US companies such as Apple, Ford, Medtronic, Nvidia and SpaceX rely on TI’s world-class technology and manufacturing expertise, and we are honoured to work alongside them and the US government to unleash what’s next in American innovation,” said TI president Haviv Ilan.

Howard Lutnick, US secretary of commerce, said: “President Trump has made it a priority to increase semiconductor manufacturing in America – including these foundational semiconductors that go into the electronics that people use every day.”
