Mohammed Siraj loses place as frontline pacer in India Test XI, assigned ‘No. 4 bowler’ role

Former India National Cricket Team batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has stripped Mohammed Siraj of the frontline pacer role in the Indian Test XI during the ongoing series-opening clash against the England National Cricket Team.

Sanjay Manjrekar urged the Test captain, Shubman Gill, to assign the 'No.4 bowler' role to the right-arm quick Mohammed Siraj on the fifth and final day of the Headingley Test.

Siraj is the most experienced seamer in the India Test playing XI after pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and so far he has not pulled his weight in the side.

In the first innings, he was unable to provide an adequate amount of support to Jasprit Bumrah and looked off-color with the new ball, leaking plenty of runs.

Mohammed Siraj also bowled many loose deliveries and made run-scoring pretty easy for the England National Cricket Team batters.

Although Siraj bowled the most overs for the visitors - 27 - he was not able to create the impact that was expected of him. In his 27 overs, he gave away 122 runs at an economy of 4.51 and picked up the wickets of Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse.

Also, Mohammed Siraj bowled two overs in India's second innings with the ball on Day 4 and conceded 9 runs, before the stumps with England still needing 350 runs to win.

Let Siraj be your No.4 bowler to go to - Sanjay Manjrekar

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo after the end of the play on Day 4, Sanjay Manjrekar advised Shubman Gill to demote Mohammed Siraj to No.4 in the pecking order with the ball and use Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Ravindra Jadeja more on Day 5. He elaborated:

"There will be Jadeja that Shubman Gill should go to more often, and Prasidh Krishna, I think, has got a very good mind where he doesn't feel the pressure or loses confidence easily.

"Towards the end of the first innings, I thought he was growing in confidence so Gill could tap into that. Three bowlers (Bumrah, Prasidh and Jadeja), use them as much as possible. Let Siraj be your No.4 bowler to go to. Don't go by tradition and the hierarchy in the bowling attack."

"And Shardul Thakur might have a surprise around the corner. But that's how he (Gill) should go with the number of overs."

Are England favorites to win the match? Sanjay Manjrekar reveals

England have 10 wickets in their hand and many believe they can pull off the colossal run-chase on Day 5 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

However, Sanjay Manjrekar thinks differently. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, when Manjrekar was asked if the Three Lions are favorites to win, he replied by highlighting the nature of the pitch and how it has started to favor the bowlers. He said:

"No, It's a different surface. The cracks are clearly starting to play a role. It's a dry pitch so there is going to be lateral movement more than what we saw in the first innings.

"There is a rough building up for Jadeja perfectly just outside off for the left-hand batter and they've got a few important left-hand players - Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes."
