Celebrity Puzzling: Host, team captains and guests for new C5 gameshow

There’s a new quiz show on the block vying for viewers with the likes of Pointless, Only Connect and The 1% Club but this time it’s the celebrities who are being put to the test.

Channel 5 is launching Celebrity Puzzling which pits famous faces against each other for a high stakes battle of logic and wordplay.

Each episode they will tackle a range of fun and fiendish puzzles testing lateral thinking and problem-solving all for the bragging rights of becoming the best puzzle-solvers in show business.

We take a look at what to expect.

Jeremy Vine is the host of the new quiz show on Channel 5.

He said: “It’s amazing to do a quiz that’s so simple and yet feels so fresh in every way.

“Celebrity Puzzling is one of those shows where, from the very first edition, everything fell into place with our amazing 5 team… not to mention burning through quite a few brain cells as we all tried to solve those beastly puzzles!”

The journalist and presenter is best-known for his BBC Radio 2 weekly lunchtime show.

But the 60-year-old also fronts two shows on Channel 5, the quiz show Eggheads and the daily morning current affairs show Jeremy Vine.

He has previously presented Newsnight, The Politics Show and Panorama.

    Who are the team captains?

There are two team captains on the show: Carol Vorderman and actress Sally Lindsay.

Vorderman, 64, is no stranger to quiz shows having started her career on the Channel 4 game show Countdown.

The Cambridge graduate has presented shows such as Tomorrow’s World, Better Homes and Loose Women.

Sally Lindsay, 51, rose to fame playing Shelley Unwin in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street.

The actress has starred in shows such as Scott & Bailey, Mount Pleasant and The Madame Blanc Mysteries. She hosted the Sally Lindsay’s 70s Quiz Night and like Vorderman, she has been a presenter on Loose Women.

The episode opens with the “In Other Words” round, where teams must decode two-word answers using only initials and cleverly crafted synonyms.

Then it’s “Thirdle”, where stacks of words are missing their third letters and teams must race the clock to complete the vertical word.

In “Cinema Cypher”, film titles are obscured by symbols. Solving it without help gets the team full points, taking a clue means accepting a deduction.

The next round is “Heat Map”, a case of deduction under pressure, in which letters turn yellow, orange or red depending on how often they appear.

The penultimate round is “Funundrum”, in which teams must unscramble three anagrams, each harder than the last, to earn vital bonus points.

And then it’s all down to the final round “Memory Bank”, where teams must memorise a grid of 12 words before they are hidden behind numbered tiles, then buzz in with the right number to answer trivia.

Only one team can claim the puzzling crown.
