LOVE Island USA fans were left baffled after spotting something strange from Cierra while she was sleeping.
As the Peacock dating show continues, cameras cut to the group asleep in their beds after another hectic day in the Fiji villa.
However, one fan took a picture of Cierra with a white bar across her mouth while she was asleep, before posting it on Reddit to ask what it was.
Fans were quick to point out that it was mouth tape – which has grown in popularity in recent months thanks to TikTok amid claims it can lower blood pressure, prevent snoring by promoting nasal breathing, and even improve your jawline.
But fans were quick to worry about Cierra, saying she shouldn’t be using tape as it has no proven scientific benefits, and could actually restrict her sleeping abilities.
“This would be a death wish for me during spring / summer allergy season lmao but good for her,” wrote one.
“It’s mouth tape,” said a second. “There is no scientific backing that it’s actually effective for your breathing. It is another TikTok trend that has no scientific basis.”
“Yeah you should NEVER use these unless you’ve had a sleep study done at the neurologist,” noted a third.
However, others claimed that they use mouth tape themselves and have noticed the benefits, saying they have had better sleep as a result.
“I have constant extremely stuffed sinuses. I’ve been mouth taping for a few months and have never slept better, and it has reduced my overall stuffiness,” one wrote.
“It seems counter intuitive but it will help!”
While a third noted: “It, ironically enough, unclogs your sinuses. I always wake up with a stuffy nose & I’ve been mouth taping for a month and my sinuses have cleared up.”
Speaking to Henry Ford Health, sleep specialist Dr Luisa Bazan said: “There’s no evidence to suggest that taping your mouth shut overnight is helpful, and it could put you at risk for a host of side effects.”
She added: “If you’re breathing through your mouth while you’re sleeping, it’s because you can’t get the air you need through your nose.
“Adults breathing through their mouths may have a nasal obstruction like polyps or a deviated septum.”
