A new era begins in New York and the Giants might just have struck gold.
While Shedeur Sanders is making headlines for all sorts of reasons, another emerging quarterback is getting his head down and making an early mark on the field.
Having moved on from Daniel Jones mid-way through the 2024 season, the Giants enter the 2025 NFL season with some fresh new faces who they hope will be able to facilitate the young offensive core that General Manager Joe Schoen has been putting together.
Big Blue sent shockwaves around the NFL when they traded up into the first round of the draft to select jaxson Dart, having sent the Houston Texans their second-round selection (34th overall), third-round pick (99th overall) and a 2026 third-rounder to cement the deal.
This perhaps came off as much more of a surprise due to the fact that Sanders was still on the board, with the 23-year-old highly touted to be a top pick in the first round.
Dart was the second quarterback selected in the draft following the Tennessee Titans’ selection of Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick, while Sanders eventually slid to the fifth round, where he was selected by the Cleveland Browns.
There are now three new signal callers in the Giants’ QB room as Super Bowl-winning veteran Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Jaxson Dart, all entering the fray.
They join New Jersey native Tommy DeVito in the quarterback room and while Sanders has been in the news for his actions off the field, Dart is already making a positive impression with his efforts..
“I feel like I’ve made tremendous strides,” he said.
“Especially from my first day to now, just being able to understand the pictures of the offense and whatnot. Obviously, I have to dive into a lot more, but I’m definitely just trying to take it to the next level over the summer.
“Really just lock in, hone in on as much as I can throughout this time, so that way when I get back for training camp, I’m on an even better level than I’m now.”
Wilson signed a one-year, $10.5 million deal with the Giants in the off-season, but due to various incentives included in his contract, that figure could yet rise up to as much as $21 million.

Having given up some considerable draft capital to be able to move up the board to select Dart, there is the expectation that head coach Brian Daboll sees him as the franchise QB going forward.
So far, he hasn’t disappointed. During OTA’s and minicamp practices, Dart has impressed with his progress, so much so that he appears to have surpassed Winston and DeVito to become the second-string QB already.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, it seems only a matter of time before Dart replaces Wilson as the starter.
“Russell Wilson is going to be the starter. There’s no surprise there. I expect Russell Wilson to take the first snap with the first team in the first game for the Giants,” Rapoport said on an appearance on NFL Network.
“You listen to everything Brian Daboll says, you get an understanding of how far along Jaxson Dart is, and where you think he’s going to go. It’s clearly a matter of when, not if.”
Having started his college career at USC, Dart transferred to Ole Miss in 2022, and in three seasons, he threw for 72 touchdowns and 10,617 passing yards in 39 outings.
He also finished his career at Mississippi having a 65.7 percent completion rate, with that number rising to a career-high 69.3 percent in his senior year.
Whilst he did also register 22 interceptions, the majority of those came in his sophomore season (11), with him throwing just six INTs in the 2024 season.
Dart himself believes that he has already significantly improved since working under Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka this spring.
Whilst the rookie is certainly enjoying his time as he prepares for his debut NFL season, the pressure on him is likely to mount.
Dart impressed during his time at Ole MissGettyWith the seeming inevitability of him replacing Wilson as QB1, his performances on the field may dictate the futures of both Daboll and Schoen, with the pair both under fire for the Giants’ shortcomings over the last few seasons.
Fortunately for them, Dart is surrounded by veteran talent who have the experience of taking a team all the way to Super Bowl victory.
That experience may prove to be crucial to the rookie QB’s development in the early stages of his career, with him already having shown how keen he is to learn from the veterans around him.
“Any time that I see them after practices sitting in the meeting room, I try to just sit down and listen,” Dart said in his media availability.
Wilson had one year in Pittsburgh before landing in New York with Big BlueGetty“In the meeting rooms, trying to listen and then if I have questions on the field, I’ve got three great guys to talk to and ask for advice from.
“So, I’m constantly searching for that. I don’t have any pride about myself going over to ask questions and I know that I definitely don’t know everything.
“So I definitely want to pick those guys’ brains because they’ve done it at the highest level and even won a Super Bowl.”
Whilst Dart may not be listed as the starter for Week 1 of the 2025 season, there is a growing expectation around the league that he will finish the season having cemented his position as New York’s QB1.
But he will need to make almost an immediate impact, or the Giants may be forced to make personnel changes at the top.
No pressure on the rookie, then.
