DRIVERS in a major US state can now skip months-long DMV waits and enjoy insurance discounts thanks to a new driver-education initiative.
The time and money-saving programs are set to be offered in schools for those keen to get behind the wheel.
In recent years, driver’s ed has been more elective in some schools, making it less of a universal experience for students.
But a summer program that’s coming to three locations this summer will offer the necessary skills for safe driving and provide students with an easier path to obtaining their licenses.
Summer 305, which is coming to Florida, will help students get the knowledge they need for their exams while giving them exclusive benefits.
They will be able to skip long DMV waits with special appointments and get discounts on auto insurance.
“That’s very important, I am determined to get a license and permit,” Yasmani Garcia, a student at Southridge Senior High School who is taking part in the course told NBC affiliate WTVJ.
Assistant Principal David Duque noted that skipping DMV lines is a significant incentive, as many people face long waits for appointments.
“It does give ‘em the opportunity to skip that line at the DMV so an added bonus,” he said.
“I know my mom, she waited months to get her reservation.”
Duque also emphasized that electives like driver’s ed make school more engaging for students, alongside other enjoyable courses like band or dance.
The summer program covers the Miami-Dade County Public Schools area – specifically, William Turner Technical Arts School, South Dade Senior High School and Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School.
Part of the Summer 305 program’s aim is to make driver’s education more accessible and beneficial for students, but also address the inefficiencies of the DMV process.
It also highlights the broader value of offering practical, engaging electives in schools.
The summer driving education program, open to high school students aged 15 and above, runs from June 11 to July 16, 2025, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
While it’s free to sign up, space is limited and students are urged to register as soon as possible.
For adults looking to obtain a driver’s license, they are advised to schedule DMV appointments well in advance – as wait times can span weeks or months.
Officials have even been forced to crackdown on scalpers reselling time slots to desperate drivers for hundreds of dollars, per WFLA.
Meanwhile, as learner drivers use the program to help cut their insurance bills upon completion, there are six ways experienced drivers can do the same.
State Farm, America’s biggest car insurance firm has revealed the different factors that go into insurance quotes.
It comes as motorists nationwide are facing rising car insurance costs.
