Seattle Sounders vs Atlético Madrid Stats: The Key Insights

The Opta supercomputer is backing Atlético Madrid to put their heavy MD 1 defeat behind them to secure victory over Seattle Sounders in this match. They won 68.2% of its pre-game simulations. PSG recorded 11 shots on target against Atlético Madrid on Sunday; only in once in the past decade have Atlético faced more shots on target in a single match. After going unbeaten in 14 straight home matches (W8 D6) across all competitions, Seattle Sounders have lost their last two at Lumen Field.

Atlético Madrid head to Seattle to face Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders on Thursday for their second game at the FIFA Club World Cup, looking to make amends for their 4-0 Matchday 1 thrashing at the hands of UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain.

The game saw Atlético overwhelmed by the French club, who managed 11 shots on target. They’ve only faced faced more in a single game once in the past decade (13 by Espanyol, May May 2023) in all competitions. In short, it was very unlike Diego Simeone’s side, who are traditionally hard to break down.

The La Liga club only managed one shot on target themselves, with their tally of 11 touches in the PSG box less than a third of their opponents’ total (37).

Expect them to have much more of the ball (only 25.6% possession versus PSG) and many more chances in this match against Seattle Sounders, however.

The Sounders lost 2-1 in their opening game against Botafogo at their home stadium, Lumen Field, where this match will also be played. They struggled to make an impact in the first half, with only four shots and none on target, while they went into the break 2-0 down. Their second-half performance was encouraging, though.

The Sounders held 64% possession and outshot Botafogo 19-5 after the interval, scoring the only goal of the half through Cristian Roldan. They were unable to find an equaliser despite their dominance, however, and now need a positive result in this match.

Home advantage could play a part, although their recent form at Lumen Field hasn’t been fantastic. After going unbeaten in 14 straight home matches (W8 D6) across all competitions, the Sounders have lost their last two on their own turf; they’ve not lost three in a row in their own stadium since October 2010 to March 2011.

Albert Rusnák has been involved in 20 goals in his last 27 appearances at Lumen Field in all competitions (8 goals, 12 assists), and although he didn’t score versus Botafogo, he was a constant threat. He had a game-high 12 open-play attacking sequence involvements and was directly involved in 11 shots overall (7 shots, 4 chances created).
