More so than most mainstream films, Star Wars has seen a fair amount of restoration since its original release in 1977. With new technology like CGI allowing director George Lucas to further edit his gargantuan sci-fi epic, viewers have seen more than a few versions of Star Wars released over the last five decades.
In a dramatic development that has taken both Star Wars fans and dedicated cinephiles by surprise, however, the British Film Institute revealed that they'd uncovered a rare original print of the film earlier this year.
After months of rampant anticipation, this early version of Star Wars was officially screened at the BFI Film on Film Festival, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy making a surprise appearance to introduce the film to audience members in attendance.
During her introduction, Kathleen notably commended the BFI for securing a copy of the original Star Wars -- an achievement called a "miracle” given the limited number of screenable prints there are in existence.
“It’s incredible folklore,” Kennedy said at the event. “Even when I came into the company, there was endless conversation about where everything was, and what was in fact the first print?"
"And it’s quite remarkable, what you’re going to see is in fact the first print, and I’m not even sure there’s another one quite like it," she continued. "It’s that rare. There’s so much tinkering that’s gone on over the years, and things that George [Lucas] decided, ‘I’m gonna change this, I’m gonna try that.’ And then, everybody kind of lost track of what it was.”
As mentioned by Kennedy, the print of Star Wars screened at the festival featured several key differences from George Lucas' later re-released versions. Most interestingly, the subtitle "Episode IV: A New Hope" is absent.
Not only that, but the famous Mos Eisley cantina scene which sees Han Solo gun down Greedo remains in tact -- much to the delight of every "Han Shot First" fans in the audience.
