The US Open is underway with more than 150 golfers bidding to become the 125th champion of one of the sport’s major tournaments.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy is among the favourites this year, but he is up against Americans Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau on their home turf.
Regarded as one of the toughest tests in golf, this year it has returned to arguably one of the most testing courses in America at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Players have four days to prove their worth and secure what is expected to be a multi-million dollar prize. Last year saw a prize pot of $21.5m (£16m), with the winner pocketing $4.3m (£3.2m).

The event is marking its 125th year and is being held at Oakmont Country Club in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Over the course of the first two days, the 156 golfers play two rounds. Those in the top 60 (plus ties), in other words, players with the lowest number of strokes, then make it through to the final two days at the weekend.
These golfers then play a further two rounds on each day, and the leading scorer after 72 holes will win the trophy.
If there is a tie at the end of the tournament, the leading golfers play two additional holes and the one with the lowest number of strokes wins, which is known as a two-hole aggregate play-off.

For day one of the tournament, there are 156 players taking part with staggered start times across tee one and tee 10. All timings are in British Summer Time, which is five hours ahead of the local US time, and (a) denotes an amateur player.

American professional golfer Scottie Scheffler is currently the hot favourite to win the tournament.
Ranked the world’s number one player, he has won the Masters twice and the 2025 PGA Championship and has been compared to Jack Nicklaus for the way he plays the game from tee to green with minimal mistakes.
But he has yet to win the US Open.
The 28-year-old from Dallas, Texas, has odds of 16/5 to win on the comparison website Oddschecker.
Fellow American Bryson DeChambeau is next in line with odds of 8/1 for victory.
The 31-year-old, originally from California, has form in this tournament. He is the reigning US Open champion from 2024 and also won in 2020.
Ludvig Aberg is third in line for the US Open crown, according to the betting odds, with 10/1 to win.
The Swedish professional golfer, 25, has a world ranking of six and was part of the winning European team in the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Jon Rahm is the fourth favourite to win the US Open at present despite being ranked 77th in the world.
Rahm, 30, from Barrica, Spain, has odds of 14/1 and has a previous US Open win to his name in 2021. He also won the Masters in 2023.
The UK’s hopes rest on Rory McIlroy, who is currently the fifth favourite to win, according to Oddschecker, with odds of 18/1.
The 36-year-old, from County Down, Northern Ireland, is currently ranked number two in the world and has tasted success at the US Open before, winning in 2011.
Coming in sixth place among the current favourites is Xander Schauffele from San Diego, California.
The 31-year-old won the PGA Championship and the Open Championship last year and is currently ranked number three in the world and has winning odds of 20/1.
