A quarter-century after its debut, Requiem for a Dreamreturned to the spotlight at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, with its legendary star, Ellen Burstyn, 92, gracing the 25th-anniversary screening in a marigold yellow blazer. Her portrayal of the tragically hopeful and ultimately devastated Sara Goldfarb earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Burstyn’s career, which began in the late 1950s, has seen her conquer every major acting award, earning an Oscar for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, a Tony for Same Time, Next Year, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. Long before her turn in Requiem, she terrified audiences and garnered critical acclaim for her role in the 1973 cultural phenomenon, The Exorcist.

As Chris MacNeil, a mother grappling with the demonic possession of her young daughter, Burstyn delivered a performance of terror and maternal love that anchored the film and earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Her ability to navigate both the supernatural horror of that film and the gritty realism of projects like The Last Picture Show showcases a versatility that has defined her career.

The Requiem anniversary screening brought Burstyn back together with director Darren Aronofsky and costar Brendan Fraser for a conversation about the film's enduring impact. The psychological drama, based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., follows the lives of four individuals as their dreams unravel due to addiction. Burstyn’s character, Sara, a lonely widow, becomes addicted to amphetamines in her desperate quest to fit into a red dress for a television appearance she believes is forthcoming.
