Rugby fans of all can discover the full collection online from the Charles Tyrwhitt website.

Charles Tyrwhitt has a reputation for fine tailoring and a history of support for British sport, and combines both with this collection, featuring classic polos, jersey shirts, merino jumpers and gilets as well as socks, boxers and ties – all embroidered with the iconic Lions crest.

The collection is all about performance, crafted from top-quality and breathable materials that always feel good next to the skin, whether you’re watching the tour Down Under, in the pub or even from the office during those midweek games.

To gain insight into the demands of performing at the highest level, Charles Tyrwhitt spoke about what it takes to succeed under pressure with Lions legends from all four home nations, spanning every tour since 1997 to 2021.

Here’s exclusive insight into life on the tour from three-time Lions player Matt Dawson, two-time Lions captain Sam Warburton, two-time test match animal Jamie Heaslip, and current Scotland Head Coach, Gregor Townsend, who has been involved as a player and most recently as a coach.

Is playing for the Lions truly the pinnacle of your rugby career?

MD: As an individual player, it’s so competitive just to get on the tour, and you have to be playing out of this world. If you are lucky to be playing for your country a lot, you can reach the pinnacle of a World Cup, but the tradition and history of the Lions is unique.

GT: Lions is a moment in time – you have to be lucky enough to be fit, playing well and then get selected. You’ve got 6 weeks together to go and win a test series. It’s an adventure and can only be won once every 4 years. It’s a unique experience, involving meeting new players and always travelling away.

JH: When I realised that I was ok at rugby, the dream was Ireland and then the Lions. The Lions became the pinnacle as you’re being selected with the very best players. Although I would still like to have had that World Cup medal around my neck!

SW: If I finished my career without playing for the Lions, there would be a massive gap – not a regret, but I’d struggle to let it go and would feel like there’s unfinished business. It’s a weird feeling when you meet players at the hotel and jump on the Lions bandwagon; all egos are gone. It’s a very special feeling when you see that jersey and initial on your kitbag.

Should combining the best of the 4 home nations always result in a winning tour?

GT: On some tours, the Lions should win, but often you’re playing world champions – so it’s quality against quality.

JH: The hosts have an advantage and all know each other. It’s business as usual for them so familiarity works in their favour at the start.

SW: It does take a bit of time to iron out the details. Within 4 weeks, you’re good, but the first 3 games are the trickiest of the tour.

MD: The teams that speed up the familiarity process tend to have successful tours. We had great Lions squads in the early 2000s that didn’t gel together. When Lions get that right, they’re notoriously difficult to beat.
