Rohit Sharma makes painful confession about disappointing his father

Veteran Team India opener Rohit Sharma revealed his father's reaction to his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the upcoming England tour. The 38-year-old cricketer stated that his father, Gurunath Sharma, was disappointed by the retirement decision, adding that he doesn't like "new-age" cricket.

Rohit surprised many by announcing his retirement from Test cricket just before the five-match Test series in England, which begins on June 20. He, who recently played for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, made this decision in May 2025. Shubman Gill was named India’s new captain for the red-ball format.

At the launch of Puja Pujara’s book, The Diary of a Cricketer’s Wife, in Mumbai, Rohit Sharma said his father, who worked in a transport company, made many sacrifices to support their family. Rohit also revealed that his father has been a fan of Test cricket and doesn’t like this new-age cricket.

"My father worked in a transport company. Like I said, what my mom did, my father was very much involved in sacrificing things so that we could have our life. But my father always, since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn't like this new-age cricket," Rohit said.

Sharma struggled with his form during the series against New Zealand and Australia. It's worth mentioning that he was dropped from the final Test in Sydney. However, Rohit stated that he was not planning to quit ahead of the fifth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

That Day I Scored 264 in the ODI… - Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma said his father showed little excitement after his record-breaking 264-run innings against Sri Lanka in 2014, which still stands as the highest individual ODI score. He recalled that his father simply responded with a calm “well played,” without much excitement.

"I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It's important to go out there and all that. But even if I used to get good 30s or 40s or 50s or 60s, in Test cricket used to talk to me about it in detail. So that's the kind of love he had for the game. And he's obviously seen you go up the ranks."

He Was a Little Disappointed When I Announced My Retirement - Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma said that his father was disappointed when he announced his retirement from Test cricket. However, his father also felt proud of Rohit's achievements.

"My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with red ball, obviously. So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that's my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible," said Rohit (via aforementioned source).

Rohit scored 4,301 runs across 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries. He led India in 24 Tests, with 12 wins, but also suffered nine losses. However, his tenure ended on a low note with India losing consecutive Test series to New Zealand (0-3) and Australia (1-3).
