TV Host, 83, Celebrates a Milestone No Other Woman Ever Has

Joy Behar reached an exciting career milestone on Tuesday.

During The View’s 30th season premiere on Tuesday, co-host Whoopi Goldberg announced that Behar has hosted the show for 28 of its 30 seasons, making her the longest-running female host of an American talk show. Behar joined the daytime talk show program when it debuted on ABC in 1997, but took a two-year break from August 2013 to September 2015.

“All I can say is that I was here when the show was in black and white,” Behar joked.

The milestone of Behar was celebrated on the show by the other co-hosts: Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro.

While on set for the season premiere, Behar spoke with Entertainment Tonight, telling the outlet that she had only learned that day that she had hosted more seasons of an American talk show than any other woman. “That’s crazy” were her first words.

“To be on the air longer than Regis Philbin or the Jolly Green Giant,” Behar continued. “There’s something wrong with that.”

At the time Behar took this job in 1997, she was also up for a sitcom, but ended up accepting The View because she wanted to stay in New York City instead of moving to Los Angeles, and knew that Barbara Walters (who passed away in late December 2022) was running the program. 30 years later, The View still remains a popular program due to the unfiltered and hot-topic debates discussed on the panel.

The American TV host and comedian was born and raised in New York City, specifically in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn. She attended Queens College for her undergraduate degree and received her MA in English Education from Stony Brook University. Throughout the 1970s, Behar worked as a high school teacher on Long Island.

Behar’s career in television started in the 1980s when she became a receptionist and then a producer on Good Morning America. She eventually started performing stand-up on the morning television program, as well as brief stunts on different variety shows. In the early 1990s, Behar hosted a talk show on 77 WABC radio in New York City before becoming an original panelist and co-host of The View.

“It seems like a long time of my life that I dedicated to this show, but it’s great,” Behar said. “It gave me a wonderful seat at the table to express my particular views to the country. I mean, it’s a privilege.”

Season 30 of The View is filmed in New York City and airs on weekdays at 11 am ET on ABC. Episodes are available to stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+.
