Oakland teacher saved girlfriends life in a final act of love

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- A Castlemont High School teacher saved his girlfriend's life "in a final act of love and selflessness," his family wrote. Marvin Boomer, a beloved and inspirational math teacher, pushed his girlfriend out of the direct path of a car that slammed into Boomer on a sidewalk, according to a home surveillance video reviewed by KRON4 and a statement from his family.

Boomer was killed, and his girlfriend suffered serious injuries. The couple had been out on an evening stroll May 28 when a stolen car zoomed through an Oakland neighborhood and crashed into them, investigators said. Less than a minute before the crash, the teenaged driver had been chased by California Highway Patrol officers. The pursuit was terminated, but the teen continued driving recklessly, the CHP said.

In a home surveillance video, the couple can be seen as they desperately tried to dodge the out-of-control car on East 21st Street. The car destroyed a fire hydrant and plowed into a tree before it finally stopped. In another surveillance video, neighbors are seen running down the street, rushing to help the victims.

Boomer's family released a statement through the Oakland Unified School District Monday describing his heroic actions.

The statement read, "He was walking with his girlfriend when the stolen vehicle barreled toward them. In a final act of love and selflessness, Marvin pushed her out of the path of the oncoming car, saving her life. Although she was still struck and has sustained severe physical injuries and deep psychological trauma, it is clear that Marvin’s actions spared her from also being killed."

In the statement, the girlfriend wrote, "Marvin gave his life to save mine. I’m still here because of him. But I lost the love of my life. I am living with unimaginable pain -- physical and emotional." The girlfriend is not releasing her name publicly and wishes to protect her privacy as she continues healing.

Boomer had recently completed his Ph.D in Educational Research and Policy Analysis. He was killed just two days before his senior students received their diplomas at Castlemont High School's graduation ceremony Friday.

The teacher is remembered for taking students under his wings as Castlemont's College and Career Pathways Coach, as well as making "being smart cool," friends said.

"Dr. Boomer was more than a teacher — he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of strength and inspiration in the halls of Castlemont. His legacy will live on in the school community and in the countless lives he helped shape," Oakland Unified School District officials wrote.

The May 28 tragedy sparked concerns from some community members over risks and dangers caused by high-speed police chases.

CHP officers terminated their pursuit seconds before the deadly collision, according to the CHP. The driver of the stolen car, Eric Scott Hernandez-Garcia, 18, of Oakland, is charged with felony vehicular manslaughter, evading police, and hit-and-run.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office wrote, "Although the CHP chase was called off, it is alleged that Mr. Hernandez-Garcia continued to drive recklessly with a disregard for the safety of others, lost control of the stolen car in an intersection of a residential neighborhood, and struck two individuals who were walking on the sidewalk."

Hernandez-Garcia is being held behind bars at Santa Rita Jail without bail, inmate records show. He is scheduled to appear before a judge on June 20 to enter a plea at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.

Marvin’s sister, Tynesha Boomer, wrote, "My brother Marvin was loving, kind, and full of life. He didn’t deserve to die on an evening stroll. We are heartbroken and are asking the public to please let us mourn in peace, without speculation, disruption, or unauthorized representation. We appreciate the community’s love and concern, but right now, we need space to grieve."

A verified GoFundMe page is raising donations to honor Marvin Boomer’s legacy as an educator in Oakland.

The page states, "His warmth, wisdom, and joyful spirit left a lasting impact on his family and friends as well as the countless students, colleagues, and community members in his orbit. Whether it was mentoring younger students, organizing community events, or simply being a loyal friend, Boomer gave so much of his heart to everyone around."
