IT was a family affair at the NCAA women’s lacrosse championship game on Sunday as UNC claimed the title.
Humphrey sisters Nicole, Ashley and Chloe all played in the historic triumph.
They re-united this season after Nicole, playing in her final eligibility year, returned to Carolina as a graduate student following a year at Southern California.
Nicole won all 18 of the matches she has played this year and has scored six goals.
UNC won all 22 games with Ashley and Chloe not missing a match to help their team win the NCAA championship.
It has proved to be a fantastic freshman year for Chloe, 20, who scored four goals in the 12-8 final win over Northwestern.
Chloe finishes the season with an incredible 90 goals and 28 assists – her best display coming in the 20-4 win over Florida last week, when she scored seven goals.
She has lived up to Inside Lacrosse’s billing as the No1 recruit in the Class of 2023, and has kicked on since being named 2023 USA Lacrosse High School Player of the Year.
Chloe is the star of the Humphrey family so it is perhaps little surprise her two older sisters joined UNC for her freshman year.
Ashley, 22, also returned to Carolina as a graduate following two years at Stanford.
In her redshirt freshman year in 2022 she set an NCAA record for single-season assists with 88 and led Stanford to Pac-12 Tournament and regular season titles.
She performed even better this year with 90 assists, including four in the final.
Ashley said after the game: “I have no words. It’s unbelievable.
“To be able to do it alongside my sisters is something I could never have dreamed.”
Eldest sister Nicole penned an essay sharing her reasons for returning to Carolina.
She wrote: “What is remarkable about our story is the fact that we have all persevered in the face of adversity and our time together at UNC is the ultimate reward.”
Remarkably, more than one family helped UNC to the title.
UNC head coach Jenny Levy’s daughter Kate is on the team, and played a big part too.
The freshman scored to put the Tar Heels ahead early — helping them become the first mother-daughter combination to win a championship.
Coach Levy said, “It’s awesome. I’m so happy for my team.
“They played their hearts out all year. They’re warriors, they’re dogs. Congrats to Northwestern … they’re great competitors and obviously make us better because of what we had to do to beat them.”
