Think of it as the dose of political reality Donald Trump long preferred to ignore.
Having long called Vladimir Putin a “friend,” over the weekend Trump described his Russian counterpart in ways we had not heard before.
“I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin,” Trump told reporters. “I’ve known him a long time, always got along with him. But he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people and I don’t like it at all.”
On social media he claimed Putin had gone “absolutely CRAZY!”
Trump seemed wounded by Russia’s latest missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, undermining as they did his efforts to praise Putin and sympathise with him in pursuit of a peace deal.

The reason for Trump’s anger was the wave of deadly attacks on Ukraine, some the heaviest since the invasion began. Many hundreds of drones and some more powerful cruise missiles hit 30 locations, killing dozens and injuring more.

This comes after Ukraine and Russia met for peace talks in Istanbul this month and agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners of war, small steps towards a peace Trump had once promised would be easy to achieve.
When Trump claimed he could secure a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in just 24 hours, he may have believed it.
In his first term, his administration brokered the genuinely historic Abraham Accords, which saw relations established between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan.
He also engaged in outreach with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, an ultimately failed effort but which earned praise from some who said Trump was willing try and break a stalemate.
Trump was not the first US president to think he could do a deal with Putin: George W Bush famously said he trusted him after getting “a sense of his soul.”
One problem is that Russia and the US have not shared the same strategic goals. He has always been more interested in rebuilding Russia’s status as a major player and extending its influence in Europe than playing nice with the West.

“The world may go on vacation, but the war continues, despite weekends and weekdays,” he said. “This cannot be ignored. America’s silence, and the silence of others in the world, only encourages Putin.”

This is a delicate moment. Zelensky is now hoping Trump will be angry enough that he keeps backing Ukraine and puts added pressure on Putin to try and force him to make a deal.
The danger is if Trump gets too angry or feels too aggrieved over Putin’s “crazy” behaviour, he may walk away entirely from efforts to get a deal. He and other US officials have previously threatened as much.
That would be the moment when the UK, France, Germany and other nations would have to be good to their word and try to fill the gap militarily and financially created by the absence of America.
Experts believe a united coalition could manage to do that for some months at least, depending on whether the US continued its intelligence gathering operation.
Yet it is a gamble everyone would wish to avoid.
