Greeley police: No evidence of active shooter found at Franklin Middle School

Greeley police found no evidence of an active shooter late Tuesday afternoon at Franklin Middle School, which hosted more than 100 students and up to 14 staff members at the time, according to Greeley-Evans School District 6.

Forty-two minutes elapsed between the time Greeley police received the call at 5:06 p.m. Tuesday and police issued an all-clear notification at 5:48 p.m., Greeley Police Department public information officer Kristen Duus said.

Duus said police responded to the call at 5:08 p.m. and found no signs of an active shooter. Duus said by phone Tuesday evening she did not have information on why or how a shooter was reported. Duus said the incident will be investigated by police.

The department’s news release asked anyone with information on the case to call the Greeley Police Department at 970-350-9605.

A news release from the Greeley Police Department said officers conducted a thorough search of the interior and exterior of the school. There was no indication a shooting occurred and no ongoing threat to the community, the release said. No suspect was located or identified, and no injuries were reported.

The police release said students who were inside the building were released to their parents.

The police department’s Facebook page indicated the area around Franklin Middle School on 35th Avenue reopened as of about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Greeley-Evans School District 6 chief of communications Theresa Myers said in a text Tuesday the school system estimated between 120 and 140 students were on the Franklin campus at the time of the call and response. Myers also said between 10 and 14 staff members were at the school. A soccer practice was in progress with students from Franklin and James Madison STEAM Academy, Myers said.

A news release from District 6 said Franklin staff and police quickly secured students and staff in the gymnasium while officers checked every room. The students and staff followed lockdown procedures, meaning students were kept out of sight while police secured the building.

District 6 and Franklin administrators are working with police to find out the origin of the call and report for an active shooter, the district said.

“I know everybody’s safe and sound,” Myers said in a text. “That’s all that matters.”
