Lafayette Head Coach Jim Dailey has announced his retirement as head coach. Dailey spent the last 32 seasons as head coach of the program. Dailey plans to continue with the program as a volunteer coach, helping the program on deck and with recruiting.
“I’m very thankful for the opportunity that Lafayette gave me,” Dailey said. “Lafayette Swimming and Diving has been unique in so many ways. This has been the best job in the world. It kept me young, involved and optimistic. It taught me so much about people and relationships between them. I’ve received so much from all of the alumni, student-athletes and their families over the years and hopefully, I was able to give something back. To say Lafayette has provided me a lot is an understatement. I’m very appreciative of the experience and time it allowed me to grow.”
Dailey arrived at Lafayette in 1991 and served as an assistant coach through 1993. He was elevated to interim head coach for the 1993-1994 season and was then announced as permanent head coach in 1994.
Since his arrival, Lafayette has had 35 individual Patriot League Champions and 23 men and 20 women earn All-Patriot League honors. In 2022, senior Michael Gorgan swam to an NCAA ‘B’ cut in the 100 breaststroke with a 53.50 100 breast at the 2022 Patriot League Championships. In 1992, Andrew Rutherfurd finished 4th in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships.
The Lafayette men finished 8th out of 10 teams while the women were 10th out of 10 teams at the 2026 Patriot League Championships. Mike Rinde, who has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Leopards, has been announced as interim head coach. Rinde arrived in 2024 after previously spending time at fellow Patriot League school Lehigh.
Dailey’s departure marks the 3rd head coaching change this offseason in the Patriot League. Army’s Brandt Nigro joined the Texas women’s programm, and the school hired Scott Thacker from VMI. Bucknell’s Dan Schinnerer resigned to join USA Swimming club team NCAP, and the school hired Josh Huger who most recently served as associate head coach at Cal.
