Friends of the Union holds rally advocating for fair UA worker wages

Friends of the Union rallied on the Quad on Thursday for a cost-of-living adjustment for UA employees, as well as fair wages and institutional accountability from the University.

“Higher ed is under attack. What do we do? Stand up, fight back!” said Abi Diaz, former president of Friends of the Union, as dozens of graduate students and workers repeated behind her.

The organization said it wants a $20 minimum wage for all campus workers and a $5,000 cost of living adjustment for all employees, regardless of position, which organizers say has increased by 20% in the last five years.

“The purpose of this event is to show the University that we are serious about our demands on campus,” Diaz said. “We’re hoping that the University actually takes this seriously and is willing to either raise our wages or to sit down with us and actually talk about what a livable wage might look like.”

Diaz said Friends of the Union has been collecting signatures for a COLA petition, advocating for adjustments that would benefit underpaid graduate workers and faculty alike.

“That would make a huge difference for someone like me, who’s a graduate worker,” she said. “We make poverty wages.”

Christian Martin, treasurer of Friends of the Union, also spoke on broader concerns of student rights and campus accountability.

“I’m here to talk about UA’s ignorance or carelessness, and destruction of UA students’ freedom of speech and due process,” Martin said, pointing to the University’s handling of the case involving Alireza Doroudi, which he says the administration fails to acknowledge publicly.

“Not once has this University said Mr. Alireza Doroudi’s name. Not once have they spoken of shame,” Martin said. “We have to stand with our international student friends here, or it could happen to us next.”

The rally highlighted both economic and human rights issues, connecting wage inequality to institutional transparency. Kailah Trice, a graduate teaching assistant, shared a personal story that captured the urgency of the movement.

“I joined the union last year because I had a roommate and she had to go back [to Ukraine],” she said. “I cannot afford my rent with the wage UA pays me. The University hides behind bureaucracy. I think they are cowards. They are lining their pockets.”
